Saiyan Saga

The Saiyan Saga is the first arc from the anime series, Dragon Ball Z Kai. It's main plot concerns the arrival of several aliens, known as "Saiyans", to Earth, looking for Son Goku first, and the Dragon Balls later. The most powerful of these Saiyans is Vegeta. The saga covers the arrival of the first Saiyan, Raditz, and his fight against Goku and Piccolo. It also covers the subsequent training and preparation for the arrival of the Saiyans Nappa and Vegeta. Finally, it covers the fight between the Z-Senshi and the two powerful Saiyans.

This story arc is based off from chapters 195-241 of tankonbon 17-21 of the original manga released from 1989-1990 and episodes 1-35 of the original anime aired from 1989-1990.

PROLOGUE TO BATTLE! THE RETURN OF GOKU

Kakarot, the son of the Saiyan warrior Bardock, was sent to Earth to destroy and wipe out all humanity. Son Gohan finds Goku and adopts him as his own, naming him Son Goku. Goku grows up on Earth, facing many fierce opponents and expanding his fighting abilities. After defeating Ma Junior, Goku settles down and has a son, Gohan, named after his adoptive grandfather. After five peaceful years, everyone reunites at Kame House, but their celebration is disrupted by a mysterious alien warrior!

Episode 002 – April 12, 2009 / May 24, 2010

THE ENEMY IS GOKU'S BROTHER?! THE SECRET OF THE MIGHTY SAIYAN WARRIORS

After arriving at Kame House, the alien intruder enlightens everyone about Goku's past, declaring that he is a Saiyan known as "Kakarot". He was sent to Earth to destroy all traces of humanity, and furthermore, he is Goku's older brother, Raditz! When Goku refuses to help him invade another planet, Raditz takes Gohan hostage. As Goku and the others formulate a plan, Piccolo suddenly appears! Piccolo says that in order to defeat Raditz, who is interfering with his world domination, he will temporarily join forces with Goku. The two use the Dragon Radar to search for Gohan, who is wearing the four-star-ball. They soon confront Raditz but are overwhelmed by his power and rendered speechless when they hear that the other two Saiyans are even stronger than him!!

Episode 003 – April 19, 2009 / May 25, 2010

命をかけた闘い！悟空とピッコロ捨て身の猛攻; Inochi wo Kaketa Tatakai! Gokuu to Pikkoro Sutemi no Moukou; A Battle with Their Lives on the Line! Goku and Piccolo's Fierce Suicidal Attack

A LIFE OR DEATH BATTLE! GOKU AND PICCOLO'S DESPERATE ATTACK

Goku and Piccolo challenge Raditz, but the gap between their powers is too great. So, while Goku holds Raditz back, Piccolo fires his new special attack, the Makankosappo. But Raditz manages to dodge it by a hair's breath! Goku seizes an opportunity to grasp hold of Raditz's tail, but the cruel Raditz tricks Goku and escapes, and proceeds to torture him. It's at this point that Gohan, who had been locked up inside the spaceship, unleashes his dormant power with rage and body slams Raditz!! Astonished, Raditz tries to kill the now instantly powered-down Gohan, but Goku immobilizes him. As Goku says to shoot them both, Piccolo fires the Makankosappo. The beam pierces through their two bodes!! In his death agony, Raditz's last words are that the two remaining Saiyan out in space will attack Earth in one year. Bulma and the others arrive, having followed behind, and as they watch, Goku passes away as well.

Episode 004 – April 26, 2009 / May 25, 2010

あの世で走れ孫梧空！１００万キロの蛇の道; Anoyo de Hashire Son Gokuu! Hyaku-man Kiro no Hebi no Michi; Son Goku Runs in the Afterlife! The Million Kilometer Snake Road

RUN IN THE AFTERLIFE, GOKU! THE ONE MILLION MILE SNAKE WAY!

Piccolo steals the unconscious Gohan from Bulma and the others, and takes him off to train in preparation of the Saiyans arrival. Kami-sama has a plan as well, and takes the dead Goku to Enma Daio. Kami-sama says that before Goku will be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls, he will train under Kaio-sama, who stands at the peak of all the gods in the universe! After receiving permission from Enma-Daio to meet Kaio, Goku begins running along the Snake Road, said to be as long as a million kilometers. Elsewhere, Kuririn visits Goku's house, but is too uncomfortable to tell Chi-Chi and Gyuumao about Goku and Gohan. Meanwhile, upon testing out Gohan's dormant power, Piccolo tells Gohan to strengthen himself so as to be able to draw that power out.

Episode 005 – May 3, 2009 / May 26, 2010

荒野のサバイバル！月夜が悟飯を呼び覚ます; Kouryou no Sabaibaru! Tsuki ga Gohan wo Yobisamasu; Wilderness Survival! The Moon Awakens Gohan

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL! A MOONLIT LIGHT AWAKES GOHAN!

Piccolo leaves Gohan in the wasteland after telling him that he will teach him how to fight if he manages to survive for six months! Meanwhile, as Goku runs along the Snake Road, he has a close call as he almost falls into Hell, located below. Gohan then becomes stuck up on a craggy rock after climbing up there while being chased by a gigantic dinosaur, and Piccolo secretly watches over Gohan. Unable to tell Chi-Chi and Gyuumao about Goku and Gohan, Kuririn returns to Kame House, where Bulma and Kame-sennin are waiting. Yajirobe stops by, and delivers a message from Karin-sama that they should come to Karin Tower, as Kami-sama will train them. When Chi Chi stops by immediately afterwards with Gyuumao, she faints when Kame-sennin tells her of Goku's death. That night on the craggy rock, Gohan transforms into a gigantic monkey! Piccolo destroys the moon once he realizes it is the cause of this, and then removes Gohan's tail after he returns to normal.

Episode 006 – May 10, 2009 / May 26, 2010

辿り着いた終点！界王様のおちゃめな試練; Tadori Tsuita Shuuten! Kaiou-sama no Ochame na Shiren; Finally Arriving at the End! Kaio-sama's Playful Test

THE END OF SNAKE WAY! KING KAI'S BIZARRE TEST!

As he endures his life of survival, Gohan has become so strong that he turns the tables on the carnivorous dinosaur and uses it as food. Meanwhile, Kuririn, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaotzu, and Yajirobe gather at Kami-sama's temple, and begin their special training! Now that Gohan has endured the half year trial, Piccolo begins their special training on the island. At that same time, Goku runs to the end of the Snake Road, discovers Kaio's planet, meets the pun-loving Kaio. After making Kaio laugh with a pun he thought up with his utmost effort, he gets permission to be trained. Kaio orders Goku to catch his pet Bubbles, on his planet with 10x Earth's gravity.

THE BATTLE WITH TEN TIMES GRAVITY! GOKU'S RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK!

Goku sprints after Bubbles with all his might, and in three weeks finally catches him! Kaio is impressed at Goku having conquered 10x gravity, and expects that he might be able to master the Kaio-ken. Continuing on, Kaio-sama gives Goku the training task of hitting his own errand boy Gregory with a giant hammer. Finally, after two weeks Goku succeeds in hitting him! Meanwhile, Kuririn and the others finish their training at Kami's temple.

Episode 008 – May 24, 2009 / May 27, 2010

いでよ神龍！サイヤ人ついに地球到着; Ide yo Shenron! Saiya-jin Tsui ni Chikyuu Touchaku; Come Forth, Shenlong! The Saiyans Finally Arrive on Earth

SHENRON APPEARS! THE SAIYANS ARRIVE SOONER THAN EXPECTED!

After studying the Kaio-ken that Kaio passed on to him, Goku tests out the effect of the Genki-dama, which he learned as well! The Saiyans will arrive on Earth tomorrow, one month earlier than expected. But Kaio forgot about the time it will take Goku to return to the lower realm! After receiving Goku's message, Kame-sennin uses the Dragon Balls to call forth Shenlong, and restores Goku to life. The next day at 11:43 AM, the Saiyans at last land in East City!!

Episode 009 – May 31, 2009 / June 1, 2010

ヤムチャ奮闘！おそるべし栽培マン; Yamucha Funtou! Osoru Beshi Saibaiman; Yamcha's Hard Struggle! The Terrifying Saibaimen

YAMCHA'S STRUGGLE! THE TERRIBLE SAIBIMEN!

Vegeta and Nappa emerge from the two space pods and Nappa wipes out East City with a single blast. They then fly off towards the island where Piccolo and Gohan are in search of the Dragon Balls. Kuririn arrives first, and the three face off with Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo learns for the first time that he is a Namekian when he is told so by Nappa! At Vegeta's order, Nappa plants seeds in the ground, and from them six ferocious Saibaimen are born!! Tenshinhan, Chaotzu, and then Yamcha fly in to join in the battle. Vegeta suggests they have a game of one-on-one, and Tenshinhan faces off against a Saibaiman first. The Saibaiman shoots acid from his head, but he is soon defeated by Tenshinhan and because of this he is annihilated by Vegeta! Next, Yamcha fights in place of Kuririn, and the Saibaiman he defeats latches onto him and self-destructs, infuriating Kuririn!

Episode 010 – June 7, 2009 / June 2, 2010

待ってろ餃子！天津飯絶叫の気功砲; Matte ro Chaozu! Tenshinhan Zekkyou no Kikouhou; Wait, Chaotzu! Tenshinhan's Screaming Kikoho

SIT TIGHT, CHAIOTZU! TIEN'S SCREAMING TRI-BEAM!

The ki blast fired by the enraged Kuririn defeats three of the Saibaimen, and Piccolo wipes out the surviving one, but Vegeta and Nappa are uninjured! After getting Vegeta's permission to fight against all five of them on his own, Nappa knocks off Tenshinhan's left arm! Chaozu clings to Nappa's back and self-destructs!! But even with this, Nappa is unaffected. Nappa beats Tenshinhan around after Tenshinhan, weeping at Chaotzu's death, furiously attacked him! Piccolo and Kuririn challenge Nappa with a combo play, but their surprise attack fails when Gohan gets scared and runs away. To avenge Chaotzu, Tenshinhan dies after firing a Kikoho mustering the last of his energy!! Even this doesn't defeat Nappa!! Vegeta tells Kuririn that he will stop the battle for three hours, until Goku comes.

Episode 011 – June 14, 2009 / June 3, 2010

間に合うか孫悟空！？戦闘再開まで３時間; Maniau ka Son Gokuu!? Sentou Saikai Made San-Jikan; Will Son Goku Make It?! The Battle Resumes in 3 Hours

WILL GOKU MAKE IT IN TIME?! THREE HOURS UNTIL THE BATTLE RESUMES!

Vegeta tells Nappa that they'll wait for the arrival of the traitorous Goku (Kakarot), and then kill everyone. Gohan is depressed about his own cowardliness, but Piccolo treats him harshly. Waiting impatiently, as a diversion Nappa flies off to have a little fun with the people of Earth! Three hours then passed, and Piccolo and the others fight Nappa once again!! Meanwhile, after crossing the Snake Road, Goku arrives in the lower world and flies off on Kinto-Un. Carrying out his secret plan, Piccolo grabs the Saiyan weak spot, their tails. But since Nappa has strengthened his tail, Piccolo is instead defeated! Kuririn's special attack, the Kienzan, is also dodged by Nappa, and as the danger continues, Gohan and the others sense the approaching Goku's ki. An impatient Vegeta orders Nappa to kill the three of them, and after being angered by Gohan's desperate counterattack, Nappa fires a tremendous energy bullet at him. At that moment, Piccolo spreads out his body to cover Son Gohan!

Episode 012 – June 21, 2009 / June 7, 2010

ピッコロが流した涙…孫悟空怒りの大反撃！; Pikkoro ga Nagashita Namida... Son Gokuu Ikari no Dai-Hangeki!; The Tears Piccolo Shed... Son Goku's Furious Counterattack!

FAREWELL, PICOOLO! GOKU'S FURIOUS COUNTERATTACK!

Piccolo passes away, saying that it is good to die protecting Gohan! At the same time up in the temple, Kami-sama vanishes away as well so does the Earth Dragon Balls. Even after powering up by going into a frenzy, Gohan uses up all of his power. Nappa aims for Gohan, but Goku arrives in the nick of time! After learning of Piccolo and the others' deaths, Goku removes the joyful Kuririn and Gohan from the battle, and faces off against Nappa alone! Nappa doubts Goku's overwhelming power, but Goku easily dodges his wild attacks! Nappa goes mad with rage at Goku, against whom all his attacks are ineffective! However, he is yelled at by Vegeta and faces Goku calmly, but even then he is dumbfounded when his greatest attack doesn't work against Goku. Frustrated, Vegeta orders to switch with Nappa so he can take on Goku.

Episode 013 – June 28, 2009 / June 8, 2010

これが界王拳だ！！限界バトルの悟空ＶＳべジータ; Kore ga Kaiou-ken da!! Genkai Batoru no Gokuu Tai Bejiita; This is the Kaio-ken!! A Battle to the Limit: Goku vs Vegeta

THE POWER OF KAIO-KEN! GOKU VS. VEGETA!

Frustrated, Vegeta orders to switch with Nappa, but after Nappa goes after Gohan and Kuririn instead, Goku defeats him with an unexpected Kaio-ken!! Vegeta is surprised, but heartlessly annihilates Nappa as he begs for help! Goku tells Gohan and Kuririn to return to Kame House, and flies with Vegeta to some craggy mountains. Their duel begins, and Goku finally uses the Kaio-ken against Vegeta, who displays power exceeding Goku's! With not even that defeating Vegeta, Goku is shocked when Vegeta displays his full power by shaking the earth and atmosphere! As Vegeta recommences his attacks, Goku is pushed back even after using Kaio-ken x2, and having surpassed his body's limit, he reluctantly resolves to use Kaio-ken x3!!

Episode 014 – July 5, 2009 / June 9, 2010

激突かめはめ波！ベジータ執念の大変身; Gekitotsu Kamehameha! Bejiita Shuunen no Dai-Henshin; Kamehameha Clash! Vegeta's Tenacious Grand Transformation

AN ALL-OUT KAMEHAMEHA! VEGETA'S TERRIBLE TRANSFORMATION

Risking his own life to use the Kaio-ken x3, Goku wildly attacks Vegeta! Hit with these attacks, Vegeta is astonished and confused, but even Goku's body is strained by the Kaio-ken x3. Mad with rage, Vegeta fires a Gyarik-ho in order to obliterate Goku and the Earth with him, but Goku resists with a Kaio-ken x4 Kamehameha! Vegeta is blown away! But after returning covered in wounds, Vegeta creates an artificial moon to take the place of the destroyed one, and transforms into an Oozaru!! After seeing the artificial moon on his way back to Kame House, Gohan is concerned for Goku and once again returns to the battleground. Kuririn follows behind. As Goku is being chased by Vegeta, whose power has increased tenfold by transforming into an Oozaru, he realizes that the monster who killed his adoptive grandfather was actually his own transformed form!

Episode 015 – July 12, 2009 / June 10, 2010

絶体絶命の悟空！元気玉に願いを託せ; Zettai Zetsumei no Gokuu! Genki-dama ni Negai wo Takuse; Goku in Absolute Peril! Entrust Your Wishes to the Genki-dama

GOKU ON THE ROPES! PIN YOUR HOPES ON THE SPIRIT BOMB!

Firming his resolve, Goku tries to make a Genki-dama. But he is hit by an attack the instant he finishes gathering ki, and though he manages to wound the Oozaru's right eye in his battered state, he has both of his arms crushed, and ends up with Vegeta trying to crush him. Finding Goku in a pinch, Gohan and Kuririn watch Goku and Vegeta's fight in hiding the whole time, and meet up with Yajirobe. Gohan and Kuririn try to cut off the Oozaru Vegeta's tail but fail, however, Yajirobe seizes an opening and severs it! After returning to his original form, Vegeta angrily beats Gohan around. But after being encouraged by Goku, who is lying stretched out on the ground, Gohan musters his power and faces off against Vegeta. As this is going on, Goku entrusts Kuririn with the remaining energy from the Genki-dama!

Episode 016 – July 19, 2009 / June 14, 2010

打倒不死身のベジータ！奇跡を起こせ孫悟飯; Datou Fujimi no Bejiita! Kiseki o Okose Son Gohan; The Invincible Vegeta Defeated! Son Gohan Summons a Miracle

DEFEAT THE INVINCIBLE VEGETA! WORK A MIRACLE, GOHAN!

After forming a Genki-dama according to Goku's instructions, Kuririn aims for Vegeta as Vegeta battles with Gohan! Sensing Vegeta's evil ki, Kuririn fires the Genki-dama! But Vegeta notices this due to Yajirobe's mistake, and is able to dodge the Genki-dama, but Gohan bounces it back and it hits Vegeta head on! With his battered body, Vegeta uses his remaining power to attack Gohan and the others, but the passed out Gohan's tail has re-grown! Vegeta notices Gohan's tail, but while he's beating up Yajirobe after he came at him with a katana, Gohan looks at the artificial moon and transforms into an Oozaru! At Goku's urgings, the rampaging Oozaru pursues Vegeta. Vegeta is squashed by the Oozaru the instant he finally cuts off its tail! With his breathing faint, Vegeta calls his spaceship and climbs towards it. Kuririn picks up Yajirobe's katana and walks over to finish off Vegeta before he can leave.
