Q. What is Dragon Ball?

A. Created during the early 80's by a man named Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball is based on an old Chinese legend, with a modern twist. The show focuses on a group of Earthlings who know martial arts and are capable of manipulating energy. It is a good twenty years old now and reached a mass audience in America roughly 12 years ago.

Q. Who created the anime trilogies: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT?

A. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were created by Toei Animation in conjunction with Bird Studio and Shueisha, and are based on the manga written by Akira Toriyama. The show was produced in Japan, and was dubbed into English and licensed by FUNimation. This is why you will see many different spellings of characters names from the series, as the translation is far from perfect. Dragon Ball GT was also created by Toei/Bird, but Akira Toriyama had no creative part in the series.

Q. Can you explain "this and that" to me?

A. I'm sorry, but I just don't have the time to answer every fans Dragon Ball questions. Besides the likelihood is that your question can be answered if you spend a little time searching through the information sections we offer. So make sure you check the entire site before you give up.

Q. How is the version in the US different from the original?

A. The American variant is greatly censored and cut, which greatly angered viewers who had seen the original. Roughly 19% on average is cut from every episode from seasons one and two; 53 American shows is the same as 67 of the Japanese version. Season three animation has remained pretty much untouched in the cut version, but the dialogue has been butchered significantly. And contrary to popular belief, there is no cussing at all in Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, or Dragon Ball GT. The fansubs tend to take liberties with the episodes and add a "fuck" and a "shit" when they feel it is necessary (maybe money helps =P). However, it should be noted that beyond season 3, Dragon Ball Z in its entirety has remained almost completely unchanged, especially with the release of FUNimation's uncut DVDs.

Q. What is FUNimation?

A. FUNimation Entertainment Ltd (owned by Navarre) is the American company who owns the rights to American release os Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. They edit and dub the episodes, as well as allow certain networks and companies to release them. Though they do their own dubbing, the Saiyan Saga and half of the Freeza Saga were dubbed by a different company, Ocean Entertainment Group, who has also dubbed Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Inu Yasha. CN only airs the FUNi dubs of the later half of DBZ, but you can find episodes on VHS which are dubbed by Ocean. At least until 2004, FUNimation now controls the entire dub after Geneon lost the rights causing to redub the first 67 episodes and Movies 1-3.

Q. How many episodes of DB/Z/GT are there?

A.Dragon Ball: 153, Dragon Ball Z: 291 (276 if counted the Ocean dub), and Dragon Ball GT: 64, total episodes: 508.

Q. What is Dragon Ball Kai?

A. Dragon Ball Kai ((ドラゴンボール改) is a HD remastered, revised version of the Dragon Ball Z anime ("Kai" can mean "updated," "modified," or "altered.") done for its 20th year airing in Japan. It premiered on Fuji TV on April 5, 2009 at 9:00am just before One Piece, and the two shows are being marketed together as 'Dream 9', which refers to the hour in which they both air.

Q. Will there be fillers on DBKai?

A. The answer, no. Dragon Ball Kai ultimately cuts down the filler material like they did in the original run. Toei has decided it will be edited to follow Akira Toriyama's manga.

Q. How many episodes there will be on Dragon Ball Kai?

A. From the thoughts of it, the entire Dragon Ball anime series had 508 episodes. Dragon Ball Z has 291 episodes, but it was cut down to 98.

Q. Will FUNimation secure a license to it?

A. Due to the release of the FUNimation's Dragon Boxes, they already have the Remastered Season Box sets for DBZ and DBGT. So, it will be licensed in the future along with the 2008 JSAT Special and the Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans OVA.

On the other note on February 2, 2010 in Navarre's Q3 meeting, FUNimation officially secured the license for it and it was re-titled "Dragon Ball Z Kai". Good name isn't it?
