He's a rare pure martial artist, who only wishes to get stronger. He is a serious warrior hailing from the Crane School. Initially, Tenshinhan was a pretty bad guy, essentially working as hired muscle. In the Tenkaichi Budokai, he broke Yamcha's leg during their match, just for the sake of being cruel. By the end of his match with Son Goku, however, Tenshinhan had learned the error of his ways. He had a falling out with his teacher, the Tsuru-sennin, and he and Chaotzu left the Crane School forever. After that, Tien devoted himself to becoming stronger. To that end, he and Chaotzu travel the world on various training missions. He tried to fight Piccolo Daimao, but had a difficult fight against Drum, who Daimao gave birth to, and was absolutely no match for Piccolo Daimao himself. He fought numerous enemies, such as Nappa, Saiyans, Ginyu Tokusentai, Jinzoningen #19, Semi-Perfect Cell, Cell Juniors, and Buu but always lost.

During his last appearance in Dragon Ball GT, despite being a man at the age of 57, Tenshinhan does not have any physical differences from his younger years. This may be because of his super-human traits, however Yamcha and Kuririn do have age-related differences, so this occurrence is never explained.

However, when the Earth is in danger, he will always rush back to join his friends on the battlefield.  In the early days, the wild Lunch developed a bit of an infatuation with Tenshinhan, and she continues to chase him wherever he goes. This could be one more reason Tien continues to move from place to place so frequently...
