Dragon Ball Tankobon Volume Summaries

The series was published in the Japanese-language magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. The individual chapters were collected by Shueisha  in a series of 42 tankōbon  volumes; The first tankōbon was released in November 10, 1985, while the last one was released in August 4, 1995.  In 2004, the manga was re-released in a collection of 34 kanzenban, which included a slightly rewritten ending, new covers, and color artwork from its Weekly Shōnen Jump run. There have also been two anime adaptations, both produced by Toei Animation. The first, also named Dragon Ball, adapted the first sixteen volumes of the manga. The second one was titled Dragon Ball Z and adapted the other twenty-six volumes of the series.

The distributing company Viz Media has released all 42 volumes in English in the United States. Viz titles volumes seventeen through forty-two of the manga Dragon Ball Z to reduce confusion for North American readers. Both manga series were published since March 2003; the last volume of the first part was released in August 3, 2004, while the last one of the second part was released in June 6, 2006. As of June 2008, Viz began re-releasing both manga series in a wideban format called "VIZBIG Edition", which is a collection of three volumes in one. Viz includes the title pages from the series' original run in Weekly Shōnen Jump in a "Title Page Gallery" section at the back of each volume

Volume 001 - November 10, 1985 孫悟空と仲間たち, Son Gokū to Nakamatachi, Son Goku and Friends

THE MONKEY KING 

(Chapters 1-11)

A girl called Bulma meets Son Goku, a strong boy with a monkey tail. Seeing how strong Goku is, Bulma tells him to accompany her to search for the seven Dragon Balls, which are able to grant any wish to the one who collects them all. Already having three Dragon Balls together, Goku and Bulma start traveling, and soon they meet an old man called  Kame-sennin who gives them the fourth Dragon Ball and a cloud which Goku can fly on as gifts for returning his turtle. Soon they get the fifth Dragon Ball after being joined by a little pig called Oolong. While traveling in the desert, they are attacked by a powerful bandit named Yamcha and a little animal named Puar. They later discover that the sixth Dragon Ball is in a burning castle, and its owner, Gyuumao, tells them that Kame-sennin can stop the fire.

WISH UPON A DRAGON

(Chapters 12-24)

Goku finds Gyuumao's daughter, Chi-Chi, and goes with her to Kame-sennin's place. He agrees to turn off the fire and uses a powerful energy blast called Kamehameha to do it, and thus find the sixth Dragon Ball. Later, a soldier from the Emperor Pilaf steals Bulma's Balls. Yamcha helps them to enter Pilaf's castle but they are trapped in a room. With the seven Dragon Balls reunited, Pilaf summons the dragon Shenlong who would grant his wish of conquering the world, but Oolong interrupts him by wishing panties, making the Balls and the dragon disappear. While being once again trapped, Goku sees the full moon mysteriously causing him to transform into Oozaru that destroys the castle. Yamcha manages to cut his tail and Goku returns to being a child without knowing what happened. Goku separates from his friends and goes to train with Kame.

Volume 003 - June 10, 1986天下一武道会はじまる！！, Tenkaichi Budoōkai Hajimaru!!, The Tenkaichi Budokai Begins!!

THE TRAINING OF KAME-SENNIN

(Chapters 25-36)

Along with another student called Kuririn, Goku rescues a thief named Launch to take her to Kame-sennin's house, so that he agrees to start the training. Kame-sennin gives them strange methods to train such as running through jungles, find rocks or deliver milk along all the island. After finishing their training, Kame-sennin takes them to the Tenkaichi Budokai, which is a competition that reunites the strongest warriors from the planet. Goku and Kuririn easily win their first fights and manage to enter the eight best. Kuririn fights against a fat man who uses disgusting methods to fight such is his strong smell and farts, but Kuririn manages to defeat him.

Volume 004 - October 14, 1986大決勝戦, Dai-Kesshousen, The Grand Finals 

STRONGEST UNDER THE HEAVENS

(Chapters 37-48)

In the next match, Yamcha is easily defeated by an old man named Jackie Chun, who is Kame using a costume. Goku then defeats a dinosaur called Giran, after a prolonged battle in which Goku's tails reappears. In the first semifinal, Kuririn faces Jackie Chun, and is defeated as he is easily surpassed at speed. In the second semifinal, Goku fights against a man called Nam and both use techniques to fight in the air. Nam loses, but Roshi tells him about how to get the water he needed to give to his poor town, and also explains that he participates in the tournament to avoid his students win and they may think they are the strongest fighters. Then, the final match between Goku and Jackie starts.

Volume 005 - January 14, 1987マッスルタワーの恐怖, Massuru Tawaa no Kyoufu, The Terror of Muscle Tower

THE RED RIBBON ARMY

(Chapters 49-60)

During the fight, Goku sees the full moon and he once again turns into Oozaru. As Goku was out of control, Jackie performs his Kamehameha technique to destroy the moon. Goku returns to his humanoid state and as he wakes up, the fight continues. With both fighters being tired, they are only to perform a few moves, and Jackie wins the tournament. Goku decides to search for the Dragon Ball that his grandfather left to him and leaves. However, Goku gets lost as he is attacked by villains from the Red Ribbon Army, and appears frozen in a snow village. He is rescued by a family, and as he discovers that the Red Ribbon is attacking them, Goku goes to the Muscle Tower base to stop them.

Volume 006 - March 15, 1987ブルマの大失敗！！, Buruma no Dai-Shippai!!, Bulma's Big Mistake!! 

BULMA RETURNS

(Chapters 61-72)

As General Violet is defeated by Goku, he awakes the Jinzoningen #8 to kill Goku, but the android negates to attack him. Goku and Jinzoningen #8 become friends and both find the leader Colonel White, who traps them in the bottom of the tower. Goku and #8 go to the General White again and as White shoots Goku, #8 furiously knocks White. Seeing that the Dragon Ball's radar is broken, Goku goes to the West city to ask to Bulma to fix it. Bulma decides to join Goku and discovers the Dragon Ball is under the water. Kame gives them a submarine to search the Dragon Ball and Kuririn joins them, while the Red Ribbon started chasing Goku.

Volume 007 - May 13, 1987追跡！！ブルー将軍, Tsuiseki!! Buruu Shougun, Pursuit!! General Blue

GENERAL BLUE AND THE PIRATE TREASURE

 (Chapters 73-84)

Goku, Bulma and Kuririn find a dungeon under the sea and enter to find the Dragon Ball. After destroying its traps, they are attacked by General Blue from the Red Ribbon, who wants to steal the treasure from the dungeon. As they fight, the dungeon starts collapsing and they escape. Goku finds a Dragon Ball, but as they return to Kame's, General Blue steals the Ball and Goku follows him. At some point, Goku and Blue appear in Penguin Village from the Dr. Slump series. As Goku loses Blue, he meets a girl robot Arale, who takes him with her creator to repair the radar which has been broken again. Blue steals the radar but he is then easily defeated by Arale. Goku is given a new radar and goes to Karin Sanctuary where the next Ball is located.

Volume 008 - July 15, 1987孫悟空突撃, Son Gokuu Totsugeki, Son Goku's Assault 

TAO PAI PAI AND MASTER KARIN

(Chapters 85-96) 

In Karin Sanctuary, Goku befriends two indians who gift him the four stars Dragon Ball, which his grandfather originally gave to Goku. The Red Ribbon sends the professional assassin Tao Pai Pai to kill Goku. Once finding Goku, Tao Pai Pai kills Bora and easily defeats Goku to the point where he thinks he died. After Goku recovers, he decides to revive the indian father, but as he first needs to defeat Tao Pai Pai, he climbs the Karin Tower to meet its hermit become stronger. There he meets Karin-sama, a cat that trains him by saying that the water he has can make him stronger but is just a joke. After a few days, Goku easily defeats Tao Pai Pai and goes to the Red Ribbon base. After several fights, Goku destroys Red Ribbon and gets six Dragon Balls.

Volume 009 - September 15, 1987こまったときの占いババ, Komatta Toki no Uranai Baba, When Worried, See Uranai Baba

TEST OF THE ALL-SEEING CRONE

(Chapters 97-108) 

When reuniting with his friends, Bulma tells Goku that the last Dragon Ball is impossible to find for unknown reasons and Kame-sennin tells him that his sister, Uranai Baba, can find the Ball. Goku, Yamcha, Kuririn and Puar meet Baba who explains them that they have to beat her five warriors in order to explain where is the Ball. Puar and Upa defeat Spike the Devil Man by making signs of vampires's weaknesses, and then Yamcha defeats the Invincible Man. The next fighter is the Mummy Man, who defeats Yamcha but he is later defeated by Goku. Goku then easily defeats Akkuman and has the last fight against a masked old man, who is Goku's deceased grandfather, Son Gohan. After a prolonged fight, Gohan gives up confessing he wanted to see his grandson.

Volume 010 - November 15, 1987第２２回天下一武道会, Dai-Nijuunikai Tenka'ichi Budoukai, The Twenty-Second Tenkaichi Budokai 

THE RETURN OF THE TOURNAMENT

(Chapters 109-120) 

As a reward for defeating the five warriors, Baba tells the location of the last Dragon Ball and Goku goes to find it. He confronts Emperor Pilaf and his soldiers, and after defeating them he gets the Ball. Goku then summons Shenlong and wishes to revive Bora. Three years later, Goku reunites with his friends and enters the new World Martial Arts Tournament. He also meets Kame-sennin's rival, Tsuru-sennin, who has taken his two students to fight. The first match is between Yamcha and Tsuru's student, Tenshinhan. After a violent fight, Tenshinhan breaks Yamcha's left leg and wins. In the second match Jackie Chun easily defeats the "Man Wolf" and in the third, Kuririn faces Tsuru's student, Chiaotzu. As both use their techniques, Goku discovers that Tsuru is Tao Pai Pai's brother and Tsuru wants to take revenge.

Volume 011 - February 15, 1988第２２回天下一武道会, Dai-Nijuunikai Tenka'ichi Budoukai, The Twenty-Second Tenkaichi Budokai

THE EYES OF TENSHINHAN 

(Chapters 121-132)

Kuririn manages to defeat Chaotzu, and then Goku easily defeats his opponent. The semifinal starts between Tenshinhan and Jackie Chun. Surprised by Tenshinhan's abilities, Jackie gives up telling him that he could use his powers for the good. In the other semifinal, Goku faces Kuririn, and the former wins. The final start and Goku fights against Tenshinhan. Both fight at the same level, but as Goku takes advantage Chaotzu is commanded by Tsuru to paralyze him. Tenshinhan tells Chaotzu not to do it and Kame attacks Tsuru making him leave.) 

Volume 012 - April 15, 1988ピッコロ大魔王の恐怖！, Pikkoro Daimaou no Kyoufu!, The Terror of Piccolo Daimao!

THE DEMON KING PICCOLO

(Chapters 133-144)

Tenshinhan destroys the battle arena using his Kikoho technique, and both continue fighting in the air. As Goku is about to win, he is hit by a car and falls first, making Tenshinhan win the tournament. Later, Goku finds Kuririn dead and immediately goes to find the murderer, by searching the Dragon Ball he stole from Kuririn. Kame discovers that the murderer is a demon called Piccolo Daimao. Goku finds Kuririn's assasain, a son from Piccolo named Tambourine, but he is unable to defeat as he is very tired. As Goku recovers, he meets a swordsman named Yajirobe and both start killing Piccolo's sons. They are then confronted by Piccolo and Goku faces him. Goku is unable to inflict him any damage and is defeated, but Yajirobe escapes with him.

Volume 013 - June 15, 1988孫悟空の逆襲！？, Son Gokuu no Gyakushuu!?, Son Goku's Counterattack?!

PICCOLO CONQUERS THE EARTH

 (Chapters 145-156)

Using a forbidden techique, Kame-sennin tries to imprisionates Piccolo in a rice cooker, but fails and dies. Piccolo summons Shenlong and whishes to become young again, after killing Chaotzu who tried to interrupt him. As he regains his youth, Piccolo starts conquering the world by defeating the army. Meanwhile, Yajirobe takes Goku to the Karin Tower to heal him, and Korin makes him drink a sacred water make him stronger. Tenshinhan tries to seal Piccolo like Kame, but fails and is defeated by his offspring, Drum. Goku arrives and defeats Drum. He then faces Piccolo and manages to overpower him.

Volume 014 - August 25, 1988さらなる飛躍, Sara Naru Hiyaku, Even More Action 

HEAVEN AND EARTH

(Chapters 157-168)

Goku continues facing Piccolo Daimao, and the former manages to kill the latter. Goku is then rescued by Yajirobe who takes him to Karin Sanctuary. Karin tells him that Shenlong was destroyed by Piccolo, but its creator, Kami-sama, is able to restore him. Goku ascends the Karin Tower and arrives the Sacred Temple. Kami-sama is revealed to be Piccolo's good side and agrees to revive Shenlong, so that it could revive the ones who were killed by Piccolo. However, Kami-sama tells Goku to train him, so that he can defeat Piccolo's last offspring who was born before he died. Three years later, Goku reunites with his friends to participate in the new Tenkaichi Budokai. Then, the eight best start.

Volume 015 - December 11, 1988群雄割拠！, Gunyuu Kakkyo!, Rivals Standing Their Ground! 

THE TITANIC TOURNAMENT

(Chapters 169-180)

In the first fight, Tenshinhan fights and defeats his teacher Tao Pai Pai, whom he is disappointed by his desire to kill. In the second fight, Goku easily defeats Chi Chi, who was angry that he did not recognize her, and so Goku agrees to marry her as she asked him in their childhood. In the next fight, Kuririn faces Piccolo Junior, and as the latter surpasses him, Kuririn gives up. In the fourth match, Yamcha fights against a man called Shen, who is really Kami-sama possessing him. Yamcha loses and the semifinal between Goku and Tenshinhan starts. Tenshinhan uses a new technique to divide his body in four. However, Goku discovers that his power was also divided and manages to defeat him. The second semifinal starts, and Kami-sama fights against his evil self, Piccolo.

Volume 016 - February 15, 1989龍虎相討つ！, Ryuuko Aiutsu!, The Dragon and Tiger Mutually Strike! 

GOKU VS. PICCOLO

(Chapters 181-192)

Kami-sama tries to imprisionate Piccolo in a bottle, but Piccolo counterattacks it sealing instead Kami-sama. Piccolo wins the fight and eats the bottle so that Kami-sama will not bother him. Then, the final between Goku and Piccolo starts and both exchange attacks. As, Piccolo transforms his body into a giant, Goku enters his mouth and then rescue Kami. Piccolo returns to his normal state, and uses his strongest technique to explode the whole area. Although they remain weak due to the attack, Goku and Piccolo keep fighting.

Volume 017 - May 15, 1989 かつてない恐怖, Katsute Nai Kyoufu, An Unprecedented Terror 

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TEAM

 (Chapters 193-204)

Piccolo manages to seriously injure Goku, but as he think he has won, Goku throws Piccolo out of the arena and win. Goku decides to leave Piccolo alive since if he dies Kami-sama will also die, and leaves with Chi-Chi. Five years after defeating Piccolo, Goku has married with Chi-Chi and both have a son named Son Gohan. When Goku and Gohan visit Roshi, they are suddenly confronted by a man called Raditz. He tells Goku that he is from the Saiyan race born in the Planet Vegeta and he was sent to Earth to destroy it. Raditz kidnaps Gohan and tells Goku to kill 100 people. Piccolo agrees to help Goku defeat Raditz, as he was unable to defeat him earlier. When they are about to be defeated, Gohan mysteriously attack Raditz, and Goku holds Raditz allowing Piccolo to finish him using his Makankosappo. However, Goku also dies and Raditz tells that in a year two more Saiyans will invade Earth.

Volume 018 - July 15, 1989 孫悟空とピッコロ大魔王, Son Gohan to Pikkoro Daimaou, Son Gohan and Piccolo Daimao 

THE LORD OF WORLDS

 (Chapters 205-216)

Piccolo decides to train Gohan to see if he is able to use his hidden powers to defeat the Saiyans, while Goku is brought to the afterlife by Kami-sama to train with Kaio-sama. After running through a way in form of a snake, Serpent Road, Goku meets Kaio-sama and starts training with him in a little planet with the gravity stronger. After finishing his training, Goku is revived, but he is forced to run again if he wants to return to Earth. The two Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa, arrive the Earth and confront Piccolo, Gohan, Kuririn, Yamcha, Chaotzu and Tenshinhan. Nappa creates monsters known as Saibamen that fight the warriors, and kill Yamcha. Kuririn furiously destroys the Saibamen, and then they confront Nappa.

Volume 019 - November 15, 1989

いそげ！孫悟空, Isoge! Son Gokuu, Hurry, Son Goku! 

EARTH VS. THE SAIYANS 

(Chapters 217-228)

Nappa is so strong that both Tenshinhan and Chaotzu sacrifice their lives to defeat him, but they die. Nappa continues facing Kuririn, Gohan and Piccolo, but they are unable to defeat him. Gohan attempts to fight alone, but as Nappa attacks with all his strength, Piccolo protects him. Piccolo dies along with Kami-sama and thus, the Dragon Balls are destroyed. When Nappa was about to kill, Goku appears taking his place. Goku easily defeats Nappa, who is later killed by Vegeta. Goku then faces Vegeta, but he is easily surpassed.

Volume 020 - January 15, 1990 天下分け目の超決戦, Tenkawakeme no Choukessen!!, A Fateful Super Decisive Battle!! 

GOKU VS. VEGETA

(Chapters 229-240)

To fight against Vegeta, Goku performs his Kaio-ken technique to multiply his energy but it also makes him tired. After being knocked, Vegeta creates an Bruits Wave to turn into Oozaru and starts torturing Goku. Gohan, Kuririn and Yajirobe go to save him and manage to cut Vegeta's tail, returning him to his human state. Vegeta still fights against them and Goku performs the Genki Dama, which reunites the energy from the Earth. Gohan and Kuririn use it, but Vegeta survives. As they are defeated, Gohan's tail reappears and turns into a Oozaru. Gohan almost kills Vegeta, but he manages to cut his tail.

Volume 021 - April 15, 1990 めざせ！ナメックの星, Mezase! Namekku no Hoshi, Go For It! The Planet Namek 

DRAGON BALLS ON NAMEK

(Chapters 241-252)

Kuririn attempts to kill Vegeta, but Goku asks him not to do it as he wants to fight against him again. Bulma and the others go to rescue them and take them to the hospital. As the Dragon Balls disappeared, they decide to go to Piccolo's planet, Namek, in order to find other Dragon Balls that would revive their friends. Kami-sama's servant, Mr. Popo, gives them the space ship that Kami-sama originally used to go Earth, and Bulma, along Kuririn and Gohan go to Namek. Goku is initially unable to go due to his injuries, but as he is healed by Karin's medicine, he goes to Namek using a spaceship that Bulma's father repaired. In Namek, Gohan and Kuririn discover that a powerful villain named Freeza is searching for the Dragon Balls and to get them he starts killing people from there as well as wishing for immortality. Vegeta also goes to Namek with the same purpose, but he plans to kill Freeza.

Volume 022 - July 15, 1990 ナメック星人の抵抗, Namekkusei-jin no Teikou, The Namekian Resistance 

BATTLEFIELD: NAMEK

(Chapters 253-264)

Several warriors from Namek try to stop Freeza, but they are all killed by his soldiers. Gohan and Kuririn rescue a kid called Dende but they are later followed by Freeza's soldier, Dodoria. As they try to escape, Dodoria is attacked by Vegeta, who wants to know if it is true that Freeza destroyed his planet. As Dodoria reveals that is true, Vegeta kills him and starts searching for the Dragon Balls. Dende takes Kuririn with the Dragon Balls' creator, Guru, to get some help. Vegeta finds another soldier called Zarbon and fights against him. Zarbon performs a transformation that makes him stronger and defeats Vegeta.

Volume 023 - October 15, 1990 恐怖のギニュー特戦隊, Kyoufu no Ginyu Tokusentai, The Terrible Ginyu Special Squad

THE GINYU FORCE

(Chapters 265-276)

Kuririn meets Guru who gives him a Dragon Ball to help him. The beautiful and handsome Zarbon is ordered to rescue Vegeta, who already has a Dragon Ball and its location is unknown. Vegeta takes advantage of the situation and after recovering, he becomes strong enough to kill Zarbon due the Saiyans' genetic ability. Kuririn takes Gohan to visit the Guru to see if he can awake his hidden power, but Vegeta finds them. Before attacking, Vegeta discovers that Freeza strongest soldiers', the Ginyu Special Squad arrived Namek and agrees to join forces with Kuririn and Gohan. Captain Ginyu easily steals the Balls and takes them to Freeza, while the forces faces the other. Vegeta first kills Ghurd, but he is defeated by the giant Recoom.

Volume 024 - January 15, 1991 悟空か！？ギニューか！？, Gokuu ka!? Ginyuu ka!?, Goku or Ginyu?! 

GOKU VS. GINYU

(Chapters 277-288)

Both Gohan and Kuririn try to fight Recoom but they are defeated. Before being killed, Goku arrives Namek and heals the three of them. Goku easily defeats Recoom and starts fighting against Jhees and Burta. When Burta is defeated, Jhees escapes to call Ginyu, and Vegeta kills the defeated soldiers. Unable to summon Polunga, Ginyu attacks Goku to know how to do it, but he is easily surpassed. Freeza visits Guru with the same purpose, but the Namekian Nail tries to stop him. Seeing that he cannot defeat Goku, Ginew performs a technique to exchange bodies and leaves using Goku's body. Ginyu and Jhees find and attack Vegeta, Gohan and Kuririn, but Ginyu is unable to control Goku's energy.

Volume 025 - March 15, 1991 フリーザ超変身！！, Furiiza Chou-Henshin!!, Freeza's Super Transformation!!

THE WRATH OF FREEZA

(Chapters 289-300)

Having become stronger again, Vegeta kills Jhees and faces Ginyu. Ginyu tries to exchange bodies with Vegeta, but Goku intercepts the attack, recovering his original body. Ginew once again tries to change bodies, but Goku throws a frog, giving Ginyu a little body. Vegeta sends Goku to machine to recover from his injuries, and Kuririn and Gohan go ask Dende to call Polunga. The dragon, Polunga, is able to grant three wishes but can only revive one person at the same time. They ask to revive Piccolo so that Kami-sama and also Earth's Ball return. As they wish that Piccolo appears in Namek, Polunga disappears as Guru dies. Freeza appears furious and attacks them, showing a transformation that increased his height. With help from Dende, Gohan is healed during the fight and then Piccolo appears to help him. Piccolo shows to be stronger than Freeza as he fused with the almost deceased Nail.

Volume 026 - June 15, 1991 孫悟空…復活！！, Son Gokuu...Fukkatsu!!, Son Goku... Revived!! 

GOKU VS. FREEZA

(Chapters 301-313)

Freeza uses his second transformation, managing to defeat Piccolo, but Gohan saves him. Vegeta forces Kuririn injure him and then Dende heal him, so that he can become stronger. Freeza performs his final and ultimate transformation, but this time his body becomes smaller. Freeza then kills Dende so that he will not heal anybody else and Vegeta faces him, but the former is unable to inflict much damage on Freeza. After being healed, Goku tries to stop Freeza, but he kills Vegeta, who dies asking Goku to take revenge for the Saiyan race. Goku manages to fight equally against Freeza, but he reveals he will start using only his 50% of his energy.

Volume 027 - August 12, 1991 伝説の超サイヤ人, Densetsu no Supa Saiya-jin, The Legendary Super Saiyan 

THE SUPER SAIYAN

(Chapters 314-325)

Unable to defeat Freeza, Goku performs the Genki Dama to reunite energy from a few planets and shoot it to him. Goku shoots the Genki Dama to Freeza, causing a big explosion in Namek. As he try to rest, Freeza reappears alive, knocking Piccolo and killing Kuririn in the process. This causes Goku to become enraged, and has a transformation that changes his hair to gold, becoming a the legendary Super Saiyan. Goku easily overpowers Freeza, who attacks Namek so that the planet will explode in a short time. Freeza then uses all his power, and continues facing Goku. King Kai makes Shenlong revive the Namekians, and Polunga take all to Earth with the exception of Freeza and Goku, who wants to take revenge for Kuririn.

Volume 028 - November 15, 1991 未来から来た少年, Mirai kara Kita Shounen, The Boy From the Future

ENTER TRUNKS

(Chapters 326-337)

After a prolonged fight, Goku defeats Freeza and tries to escape Namek, but the planet explodes. Bulma and the others try to revive him in Earth with Polunga, but they discover that Goku is alive training in another planet. Using Polunga, Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chaotzu are revived, while then the Namekians are taken to live to another planet. One year later, the warriors discover that Freeza is alive and is coming with his father, King Cold, to Earth. They are suddenly attacked by a teenager who transforms into a Super Saiyan and kills them. The teenager then reunites with the warriors and wait for a short time, to see Goku arriving Earth. The teenager reveals his identity as Trunks, future son of Bulma and Vegeta, to Goku and tells him that the Red Ribbon Army will send two cyborgs in a few years to kill him. Trunks returns to the future in his time machine and three years later, Goku and his friends reunite to fight the two androids.

THE RED RIBBON ANDROIDS

(Chapters 338-349)

The warriors separate in a city to find the artifical humans, and Yamcha fatally attacked by them. Goku and his friends save him, and the former transforms into Super Saiyan to fight Jinzoningen #19. Although Goku overpowers #19, he is suddenly weakened by a heart disease that Trunks warned he would have. Vegeta appears saving Goku, who is taken to his house by Yamcha. Vegeta shows that now he can transform into Super Saiyan and kills Jinzoningen #19. Jinzoningen #20, who is in fact the creator, Dr. Gero, escapes to his laboratory and is followed by the warriors. As Piccolo finds and overpowers Dr. Gero, Trunks appears saying that he is not one of the two androids. Dr. Gero escapes and awakes Jinzoningen #17 and #18, who turn against him.

RISE OF THE MACHINES

(Chapters 350-361)

Jinzoningen #17 kills Gero and #18 awakes a new artifical human called #16, who is in fact a robot. Vegeta follows and challenges them to a fight. #18 soon defeats Vegeta, causing Piccolo, Trunks and Tenshinhan to interrupt her. However, #17 joins her and defeat all the warriors with the exception of Kuririn, whom they explain they aim to kill Goku. Furious by not being able to defeat the cyborg, Piccolo requests Kami to fuse their bodies so that he can defeat them. Meanwhile, Trunks is told by Bulma that a new time machine appeared. After investigating it, several people start disappearing along the world. Kami decides to allow Piccolo absorb his power, but only because there is a new monster more dangerous than the androids. After fusing with Kami-sama, Piccolo finds a green monster that is absorbing people and has energy from several known warriors.

Volume 031 - August 9, 1992 忍びよるセル, Shinobiyoru Seru, Cell, Stealthily Approaching 

THE TERROR OF CELL

(Chapters 362-373)

The creature reveals his name as Cell, the last android created by Dr. Gero using cells from several warriors. Cell says he came from a future in which Trunks destroyed the androids, so he killed him and stole his time machine to come to this time and absorb the Jinzoningen #17 and #18 to reach his Perfect form. Piccolo overpowers Cell, but the latter escapes in order to become stronger. Meanwhile, Goku has recovered from his disease and takes Vegeta, Gohan and Trunks to Kami's Lookout to train in the Room of Spirit and Time which allows them to train what would they train in a year in just a day to surpass their Super Saiyan powers. Trunks and Vegeta enter first, while Piccolo is confronted by the androids and faces #17. After absoribing several people, Cell interrupts them and knocks Piccolo. Jinzoningen #16 fights against Cell and overwhelms him, but Cell hides to absorb #17 and evolves. The new Cell defeats #16 and attempts to absorb #18, but Tenshinhan tries to stop him.

THE ROOM OF SPIRIT AND TIME

(Chapters 374-385)

Goku goes to rescue Tenshinhan and Piccolo and takes them to Kami's Lookout. As they return, Trunks and Vegeta finish training in the Time Room and go to face Cell, while Goku and Gohan enter there. Vegeta fights against Cell showing that he surpassed the Super Saiyan powers. Vegeta easily defeats Cell, but as the latter tells him that he needs to absorb #18 to become stronger, Vegeta allows him to absorb her. Cell finds #18 and Trunks tries to stop him, but he is confronted by Vegeta. Cell finally absorbs Jinzoningen #18 reaching his Perfect form and continues fighting against Vegeta. This time, Vegeta is easily defeated by Cell and Trunks releases all his power which surpasses even Vegeta.

THE CELL GAMES

(Chapters 386-396)

孤独の未来戦士！トランクス, Kodoku no Mirai Senshi! Torankusu, The Lonely Future Warrior! Trunks

In his new state, Trunks become strong enough to overpower Cell, but Cell defeats him as that transformation also made him slower and weaker. Cell tells Trunks him that in a few weeks he will start a new tournament called Cell Game, in which anybody could face him. As Trunks, Vegeta and Kuririn return to Kami's Palace, Goku and Gohan go out of the Time Room, and listen what happened. Goku decides they will not train again to defeat Cell, and both spend the time having a common life in Super Saiyan state to control that state without becoming weaker. During that period, Goku also goes to New Namek to recruit Dende to be the new Kami and the Dragon Balls reappear. The Cell Games finally starts but before fights against Cell, he is interrupted by a person called Mr. Satan , who is defeated by Cell in a short time. As well, we learn the story of Trunks' future.

Volume 034 - June 9, 1993 悟空を越えた戦士, Gokuu o Koeta Senshi, The Warrior Who Surpassed Goku 

GOHAN VS. CELL

(Chapters 397-408)

Goku starts fighting against Cell and soon both use all their power. Goku performs a kamehameha with all his energy but Cell regenerates, becoming both tired. As Goku is surpassed, he gives up and tells Gohan to fight, saying that his hidden power is able to defeat Cell. However, Gohan is unable to use his power and Cell attempts make him angry so that he could use it. Jinzoningen #16 tries to stop him, but he is killed. Cell creates short versions of himself called Cell Juniors to attack Gohan's friends, but he is still unable to use his power. With the last of his energy, #16 tells Gohan that the violence is not wrong. Gohan enrages and has a new Super Saiyan transformation that makes him strong enough to destroy all Cell Juniors.

Volume 035 - September 8, 1993 さようなら戦士たち, Sayounara Senshi-tachi, Goodbye, Warriors 

DEATH OF A WARRIOR

(Chapters 409-420)

Gohan easily overwhelms Cell, causing him to throw up Jinzoningen #18. Cell attempts to self-destruct in order to destroy Earth. Goku uses his Shukan-Ido to teleport Cell to Kaio-sama's planet so that it will not destroy Earth, but dies in the explosion. However, Cell is able to regenerate and reappears in Earth in his new Super Perfect form, killing Trunks at the same time. Cell attempts to perform a Kamehameha strong enough to destroy the planet, but Gohan receives help from Goku from the afterlife to perform a Kamehameha and faces Cell's one. With help from Vegeta, Gohan overpowers Cell, killing him. Later, as they summon Shenlong to revive Goku, he instead tells them that he prefers to stay dead so that he can fight against deceased warriors. Trunks is then revived and returns to the future, where he is now able to destroy the cyborgs.

Volume 036 - November 9, 1993 ニューヒーロー誕生！！, Nyuu Hiirou Tanjou!!, The Birth of a New Hero!!

THE NEW GENERATION

(Chapters 421-432)

Seven years after the Cell Games, Gohan is now a teenager and starts attending Orange Star High School in Satan City . However, as he does not like villains, he starts dressing as a super-hero named "Great Saiyaman" and defeats the thieves. Videl, one of his mates from school who is also Hercule's daughter, discovers his identity and forces him to enter the next Tenkaichi Budokai as well as teach her how to fly. As Gohan returns home, he discovers that Goku is going to return Earth to enter the tournament, and Vegeta, Kuririn, Jinzoningen #18 (who is now Kuririn's wife), and Piccolo also want to enter. After training with Videl, the tournament starts and Goku meets his friend as well as his son, Son Goten. Goten and Trunks from the present time are forced to enter into a tournament for children, while the other participate in an adults' tournament, where they can also face Mr. Satan who is thought to have defeated Cell.

TOURNAMENT OF THE HEAVENS

(Chapters 433-445)

Goten and Trunks confront each other in the final. After both performing several techniques, Trunks wins and is allowed to fight Mr. Satan as a reward. Being scared by Trunks' strength, Hercule pretends that he allowed Trunks to defeat him. The adults' tournament starts, and both Goten and Trunks knock the fighter Mighty Mask to use his costume to participate. Piccolo gives up when he faces Kaiō-shin, who is the god from the gods. In the third fight, Videl fights against a mysterious man named Spopovich who has gained anormal powers, and defeats Videl. In the fourth fight, Gohan faces Kaiō-shin's guardian, Kibito, but he is suddenly attacked by Spopovich and his partner Yamu, who asborb his energy in a bottle. Both men escape, and Kaiō-shin asks Goku and the other to follow him. While following Yamu and Spopovich, Kaiō-shin explains that the sorcerer Babidi plans to awake his father, Bibidi's own creation (and a powerful monster) known as Majin Buu, but he first needs to absorb the energy from warriors.

Volume 038 - August 9, 1994 宿命の対決 孫悟空対ベジータ, Shukumei no Taiketsu Son Gokuu Tai Bejiita, The Fated Showdown: Son Goku vs Vegeta 

MARK OF THE WARLOCK

(Chapters 446-459)

Goku and his friends arrive at Babidi's base but they are then attacked by his servant Dabra, who kills Kibito and transforms Kuririn and Piccolo into stone. As they enter the hideout, Goku and Vegeta easily defeat their two enemies, while Dabra prepares to fight against Gohan. Meanwhile, the tournament continues, and Goten and Trunks are disqualified for stealing Mighty Mask's costume. Jinzoningen #18 allows Hercule to defeat her but only if he gives her the double of the money the winner gets. Gohan faces Darbura, but the latter escapes to tell Babidi that they can control Vegeta since he is evil. Vegeta allows them to control them to make him stronger and starts fighting against Goku. Gohan and Kaiō-shin find Dabura and Babidi, but Majin Buu awakes due to the energy Goku and Vegeta are using.

Volume 039 - December 7, 1994 さらば誇り高き戦士, Saraba Hokori Takaki Senshi, Farewell, Proud Warrior 

BOO UNLEASHED!

(Chapters 460-472)

Majin Buu awakes as a dangerous fat creature that easily defeats Gohan and Kaiō-shin. Dabra tries to kill him but he is turned into chocolate by Buu. After tricking Goku to knock him, Vegeta appears to defeat Buu, but Buu regenerates after receiving all his attacks. When Buu tortures Vegeta, Trunks and Goten save him. Vegeta then knocks both of the children out and gives them to Piccolo, who returned with Kuririn to normal state, to escape. Vegeta then makes all his body explode, creating a big explosion but Buu manages to regenerate. Babidi and Buu start looking for Piccolo, Goten and Trunks by killing citizens. Goku returns to Kami-sama's Lookout, where he decides to teach Goten and Trunks a technique to fuse their bodies and defeat Buu. Meanwhile, Gohan is taken by Kaiō-shin and Kibito, who was revived by Shenlong, to their planet to train with the legendary Z Sword.

HERCULE TO THE RESCUE

(Chapters 473-485)

To avoid the Dragon Radar being destroyed, Goku confronts Buu to give Trunks time to find it. When Goku escapes, Buu kills Babidi, being furious with his treatment. Goku teaches Goten and Trunks the Fusion, but he is forced to return to the aftlerife, where he meets Gohan. Wanting to test the Z Sword, Goku accidentally breaks it awakening an ancient Kaiō-shin who starts performing a ritual of 24 hours to make Gohan stronger. Goten and Trunks succeed in performing the Fusion and form a warrior called Gotenks, but he still needs to train more to defeat Buu. Mr. Satan goes to face Buu, but he instead becomes his friend and makes Buu swear that he will never kill people again. However, Buu's dog is shot by a thief, causing him to create a thin Buu that transforms the fat one into chocolate. The thin Buu then eats the chocolate and transforms into Super Buu.

Volume 041 - June 7, 1995 がんばれ 超ゴテンクスくん, Ganbare Supa Gotenkusukun, Do Your Best, Super Gotenks-kun 

LAST HERO STANDING!

(Chapters 486-502)

Super Buu finds Kami-sama's Lookout and faces Gotenks in the Room of Spirit and Time. Gotenks starts performing weak techniques to make the battle "drammatic", causing Piccolo to destroy the Time Room's door. Buu creates a hole in the dimension and returns to Kami's Palace where he kills the people being there. Gotenks manages to escape along with Piccolo, and continues facing Super Buu. He is then able to overpower Buu, but before defeating him the Fusion time ends, causing Gotenks to split into Goten and Trunks. Gohan appears as the ritual ended, and fights against Boo. Gohan is able to defeat Buu, who self-destructs himself and regenerates later. Gotenks tries to face Buu again, but he is absorbed along with Piccolo by Buu. Having absorbed Gotenks, Buu is now able to defeat Gohan. Ro-Kaiō-shin gives his life to Goku and two earrings that would allow him to fuse with Gohan. Goku attempts to give an earring to Gohan, but Gohan is then absorbed by Buu.

Volume 042 - August 9, 1995 バイバイ ドラゴンワールド, Baibai Doragon Waarudo, Bye Bye Dragon World 

GOODBYE, DRAGON WORLD!

(Chapters 503-519)

With Gohan having been absorbed by Buu, Goku fuses with Vegeta who was allowed to return to Earth. They form a powerful warrior called Vegetto that easily defeats Buu, but allows Super Buu to absorb him so that he can free Gohan and the others. As he enter Buu's body, Vegetto is split into Goku and Vegeta. After investigating Buu's body, both find and free Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo. As they also free the fat Buu, Majin Buu suffers a new transformation that turns him into Kid Buu, the true form of Majin Buu. Kid Buu destroys the Earth, but Goku and Vegeta are able to escape to Kaiō-shin's planet along with Dende and Mr. Satan. Goku prepares to face the new Buu, who regenerated and appeared on that planet. However, Goku is unable to control his powers, and fat Buu battles the kid Buu. Vegeta tells Dende to use Polunga to rebuild the Earth and revive all his habitants, to allow Goku absorb their energies to perform the Genki Dama. With help from the fat Buu and Mr. Satan, Goku manages to have time to prepare the Genki Dama and then shoot it, killing Buu. Goku then returns to live with his friends and 10 years after, he enters into a new Tenkaichi Budokai. There, he confronts Buu's reincarnation, a kid called Uub, and then he decides to take him to train, so that he can protect Earth.
