As a newborn he went on for a time without a name until Goku's grandfather's name was mentioned, which Gohan liked. His early childhood was a pampered one, unlike his father's. His life was relatively well-balanced with a loving family and a nice home. Gohan was well-adjusted and intelligent, but unlike his father as a child, he lacked any affection for fighting and was easily scared at a level that most normal children would be. Goku gave Gohan the four star Dragon Ball and put it into a hat for him to honor his grandpa.

As a Saiyan/Human breed, Gohan is unusual in his values and personality. These unique values and personality separate him from pure Saiyans; as powerful as he is, he does not like fighting much. However, when he is forced to fight, he shows special interest in protecting his family and friends. Like his father, Gohan has a pure and gentle heart. Besides concerning himself with his family (and his studies), Gohan has a strong attachment with his mentor: his father's former archrival named Piccolo. Piccolo was forced to train Gohan after the death of Goku. At first the relationship with Piccolo is a frightening one, but after just one year Piccolo admits his change because of the friendship he develops with Gohan and even sacrifices himself to save the boy. Because of this, Piccolo can be considered as a surrogate father for Gohan. Kuririn also has influence on Gohan, as almost an uncle/nephew relationship, mainly because Kuririn is Goku's closest friend. In some cases, Gohan displays a ferocious appetite just like Goku, a trait he presumably inherited from his father.

According to Chi-Chi's plans, he will not have any martial arts training and he will be made to study for the education he will need for the future. This results in Gohan being raised to be so polite that he hardly resembles Goku, but at the same time since he was raised so insularly and because he was spoiled in his upbringing, he becomes cowardly and timid.

After returning from Planet Namek, he studies hard to become a scholar while he waits with Ch-Chi for Goku's return. However, Gohan devotes himself to training with Goku and Piccolo, after learning of the android threat from Mirai Trunks, who came from the future.

Gohan already showed a lot of potential power, but once he transforms into a Super Saiyan, he shows power that exceeds Goku at that same age. Even though Gohan changes into a Super

Saiyan, his dislike for fighting does not diminish. This is quite an awkward situation for a warrior. Even in the Cell Games and when he exterminated Tao Pai Pai, he was determined to do his best not to hurt his opponents. However his personality becomes a step to the next Super Saiyan form. Though, he transformed into SSJ2 after he became angry over Jinzoningen #16's destruction right before his eyes. He killed the Cell Juniors that were tormenting the Z Fighters without a second though, and he cornered Cell with merciless attacks. Though, he evenutally defeated him in a Kamehameha duel. Seven years after the events of the Cell Games, Gohan lives at home with his mother and his seven year old brother named Goten. His training has taken a backseat to his studies, and his strength has been surpassed by Vegeta and Goku. Chi-Chi decides Gohan needs to attend high school to finish his education. On his first day, he turns Super Saiyan for a robbery. In class he meets another crime-fighter and the most popular girl in school, Videl. She is the daughter of Mr. Satan, who got rich and famous for stealing Gohan's credit over the defeat of Cell. Compared to his past personality, he seems happy-go-lucky. A strange side can be also seen, almost bursting out like the Great Saiyaman. He might have been influenced by the Ginyu Special Corps, which he saw when he was younger. While participating in the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament as the Great Saiyaman, he performed this transformation in response to Kibito's taunts.

After suffering serious injury at the hands of Majin Buu, Gohan was brought to the Kita-Kaioshin's world to recover. There, To-Kaioshin, after being released from the Z-sword, used his slow but effective magic to transform Gohan into this powered-up state. His personality, on the other hand, changes drastically. Gohan's reluctance to fight is forgotten, and he sets upon his enemies without mercy.

A decade later, he marries Videl and has a child named Pan. Gohan now works for Bulma's company as a researcher and, like Trunks, he rarely trains. He now is more concerned about being a good husband and father. Gohan lives out the rest of his life in peace with his family after defeating Bebi, Super 17, and the Evil Shenlongs until dying of old age like the rest of the Z-Senshi.

Gohan is the only Z-Fighter active throughout the entire Dragon Ball metaseries who does not die until the Buu Saga, and even then, his death comes after most of the other Z-Fighters had died multiple times already.
