He is the youngest son of King Cold and the younger brother of Coola (as well as the father of Kuriza). Freeza is involved in the Freeza Force in which the Saiyans — the main antagonists prior — were members. He rules a vast empire that has control over what has been said to be over 448 planets up until his first death and subsequent revivals (Vegeta visited Planet Freeza #79 briefly after his defeat on Earth), thus taking 70% of Universe 7. At the time, Freeza himself was using that planet as a base, but was absent while making his way to Namek. Not all Freeza-dominated worlds, such as Planet Vegeta, were numbered). Freeza creates armies from the planets that he conquers, though his most utilized race were the Saiyans.

His ascenion to power began when he first visited Planet Vegeta with his father announcing his retirement.

At one point, King Cold informed Freeza that there were only two entities in the universe whom Freeza should never cross: Majin Buu and Beerus the Destroyer. He had also heard about the legends of the Super Saiyan and the Super Saiyan God — a being with unrivaled power and the only single warrior that could pose a threat to him — but dismissed it as simple mythology; however, after several Saiyans emerged with rapidly evolving potential, Freeza began to fear that the legend of the Super Saiyan would indeed come true, so as a result, at Beerus' request, he ordered all Saiyans to return to their homeworld and later wiped out the Saiyan race by annihilating Planet Vegeta — the home world of the Saiyan race.

After analyzing the Saiyans' battle against the Earth, his actions eventually lead him into conflict with the heroes of the series when he tries to take possession of the wish-granting Dragon Balls on Planet Namek. Though still no one could possibly contend with his power, Freeza's fears were realized when he caused the emergence of the mythical Super Saiyan and was defeated by him in a terrific, planet-shattering engagement. Goku, who had escaped Freeza's attempt to destroy the Saiyans, had become the Super Saiyan through Freeza's own actions.

To fulfill his wish for immortality, Freeza takes his band of henchmen to Planet Namek in search of the Dragon Balls. Once there, he is annoyed to discover that Vegeta has turned against him.  One after another, Freeza's top henchmen were defeated by Vegeta and the Z-fighters. In the end, his dreams of achieving immortality crushed, Freeza unleashed the full force of his rage upon all those who dared to defy him.

In answer to Vegeta's boast that he had become a Super Saiyan, Freeza reveals his terrible transformations, one after another. Despite his ruthless tactics in battle, Freeza maintains a refined, almost regal, composure. In his second transformed state, Freeza's appearance is similar to that of his father, King Cold. However, the refinement he displayed in his previous form is gone, replaced by a wild, almost blood-thirsty attitude. Freeza fights Piccolo while in this form, after Piccolo had powered up by fusing with Nail. After Piccolo demonstrated that his powers were an even match for Freeza's second form, Freeza transformed once again in order to instill terror in the Namek warrior's heart.

Though this is an even more hideous form than his second, in spite of appearances, Freeza's cool demeanor returns. This sharp contrast only serves to intensify the eeriness of this form.

In contrast to his previous monstrous transformations, Freeza takes on a smaller, sleeker shape in this form. Despite his reduced size, however, his power level rises to unimaginable levels, proving his claims of being the most powerful fighter in the universe. In his new form, Freeza first killed Dende, who had been healing the heroes. Vegeta announced himself as a Super Saiyan, and fought Freeza but the tyrant was still far his superior, and proceeded to punish him after Vegeta lost his hope. Just as Freeza was about to slay Vegeta, the healed Goku arrives on the battlefield, ready to fight Freeza. Vegeta, believing that Goku had finally become a full-fledged Super Saiyan, taunts Freeza, even though he is too badly beaten to even stand. Freeza, proud of his past accomplishments, smirks before sending his Death Beam through the Saiyan Prince's heart. Teetering on the brink of death, Vegeta is able to tell the newly-healed Goku of Freeza's genocide of the Saiyan race, imploring him to take revenge on behalf for all Saiyans.

As Vegeta finishes his plea to Goku, he dies. Goku, saddened by Vegeta's death, buries him and vows to finish Freeza. Goku and Freeza then spar, with Freeza realizing that his opponent is the son of the Saiyan that gave him such trouble years before. Goku and Freeza are an even match for a while (with the latter even admitting that Goku is the first person other than his parents to cause him pain in his true form), until Freeza determines and states that with 50%, he could defeat Goku. Freeza then increases his power to 50% of his maximum, and easily beats Goku, with Goku completely unable to keep up. Goku attempts to use his Kaioken x10 during this battle, but Freeza stills beats him using half of his maximum power. Goku attempts to use a Kaio-Ken x20 and a Kamehameha attack, but to no significant avail (the best he could do was slightly char Freeza's hands), as Freeza easily diffuses the blast with 50% of his power. However, he does become alarmingly aware of his opponent's remarkable abilities.

Freeza's strength and speed equal that of Super Saiyan Goku, but at a great price. Freeza's energy slowly diminishes as a result of drawing out all of his power, and he cannot endure a prolonged battle. Realizing this, Freeza fires a massive energy blast at Planet Namek's core, hoping to destroy the planet and Goku along with it. Barely clinging to life but desperate to survive, Freeza begs for mercy, which Super Saiyan Goku hesitantly provides. Freeza's pride refuses to allow him to be beaten and saved by a Saiyan "monkey", and he expends what little energy he has left to attack Super Saiyan Goku. Overcome with anger, Super Saiyan Goku fires a ki blast that consumes both Freeza and his attack and ravages what remains of him in the process. As far as actual events go, this seemingly ended Lord Freeza's reign over the galaxy. As far as the narrative element goes, this ended the true Freeza character that was developed from the beginnings of the series.

Unbeknownst to Goku and everyone else, Freeza was not killed on Namek. Freeza's shredded body floated in the planet's debris, kept company only by his thoughts of how the universe's conqueror had been thoroughly beaten by a Saiyan, but King Cold's scientists revived him.

Freeza goes to Earth with King Cold to get revenge on Goku and to destroy the Saiyans, but Trunks, a boy from the future, stands in their way. Freeza dismisses his challenger as an insolent child, and pays him almost no heed until the boy reveals himself as another Super Saiyan.  Fuming, Freeza becomes oblivious to his opponent's position, and is surprised and sliced in half by the Saiyan youth before being cut to pieces and vaporized in an effortless blast.

He made small appearance in Hell when beaten by Goku, as well as watching the Kid Buu vs. Goku battle from Hell.

Years later, Freeza was resurrected by Sorbet, one of the last remaining soldiers in the force and Tagoma after being trapped in Earth's Hell. He regenerated to gain revenge against the Saiyans, attained his golden form and was defeated afterwards. He was then temporarily revived for the Tournament of Power in which Whis revived him after Universe 7 emerged victorious thus restoring the role of Emperor.

In Dragon Ball GT, he teams up with Cell to act as a distraction for Goku while a horde of villains from the Z Fighters' past escape Hell. Freeza traps Goku in the next world, but even allied with Perfect Cell, he is eventually defeated and remains in Hell. They work together very well in fighting Goku, almost to the point where they were already on the same page long before Dr. Myu put his plot in motion. Perhaps their shared hatred for Goku, as well as the fact that Cell (having Freeza's cells in his body) knew what made Freeza tick, caused them to almost form a friendship of sorts.
