In an attempt to save his tragic future, he travels from the future to the world where Goku is alive, in order to give Goku medicine. Because of time paradoxes, for Trunks there are three futures. The first is a future where Son Goku is dead. Beaten by #17 and #18, Trunks heads to the past to save Goku after traveling to the past in his time machine to meet Goku and the others, Trunks takes this form once again in order to defeat Mecha Freeza and King Cold. The second is a future where Trunks discovers the artificial humans' deactivation device, and uses it to shut them down (Goku is dead in this future too). Because Trunks didn't know about Cell, and wasn't all that strong, Cell killed him and stole his time machine. The third one is a future where Trunks returned knowing of Cell's existence. He defeated every evil, and restored peace to the world.

In the future, he learns basic fighting from Gohan, the only surviving Z-Senshi. He was happy to meet his father, Vegeta, who was killed before he even knew him. Furthermore, there was an outbreak of time paradoxes because he saved Goku, who was to die of a heart disease, and now there are three futures for Trunks.

Like Son Goku, Mirai Trunks is muscular, yet a bit taller (after his training in the Room of Spirit and Time) and more slender. He has blue eyes and straight, light purple hair due to his maternal side. From his first appearance to the time he enters the Room of Spirit and Time, Mirai  Trunks' hair is cut short, only reaching the middle of his ears. After his exit from the Room of Spirit and Time, his hair is long, reaching his shoulders, due to a year of having to cut it himself. However, Bulma cuts it before his second year in the Room of Spirit and Time, and again after the Cell Games. Future Trunks gains his facial features and his light tan skin color from his paternal side.

Throughout Mirai Trunks' appearances, he is usually seen wearing golden boots, grey pants, a black sleeveless shirt, and an indigo Capsule Corporation jacket. (Although his jacket is a light blue color in The History of Trunks.) He also wears clothing identical to his father's, a blue skin-tight jumpsuit, white gloves, white boots with yellow tips, and Saiyan Armor. Like most other Saiyan-Human hybrids in the series, he has never been seen with a tail. Mirai Trunks appearance became slightly different when he has a blue hair and red handkerchief.

Due to living in such a bleak and dangerous future, Mirai Trunks is much different than his present time counterpart. As well, to a hostile and lonely life with nearly everyone dead, Trunks' best and only friend is  Mirai Gohan, who he is closer to with than Trunks and Gohan, although the present time-line Trunks  had Goten as his best friend, while Mirai Trunks didn't have any close friends.

Years after Cell's defeat, Goku Black, which is later to be revealed as Zamasu (a Kaioshin from Universe 10) using the body of Son Goku, wreaked havoc to his future once again, by killing his own mother and fought alongside with Mirai Mai. After an hefty battle, Zamasu was defeated and eventually erased by Mirai Zen-oh, thus ending the existence of his timeline.

It is unknown how Mirai Trunks would react to meeting Trunks, however this occurs in the video games Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors, and Dragon Ball: Raging Blast. In Budokai 3, as well as in Shin Budokai, Trunks states that it is "Just like having a brother" whereas in Legendary Super Warriors and Tenkaichi 2 he does not even realize it is his future self, and the two have a sparring match. In Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, upon encountering his past self, Mirai  Trunks is disappointed that Trunks has become spoiled and arrogant in times of peace. However he retracts his disdain for the boy after being surprised by the young Saiyan's strength after they battle, most notably at his ability to transform into a Super Saiyan at such a young age. They did meet in the manga and anime, however, when Trunks was still just a baby; once when Future Trunks rescued him and Bulma from Dr. Gero's attack, and once when Mirai Trunks came to Capsule Corporation before the Cell Games announcement. For a minute, Trunks incessantly pulled on Mirai Trunks' hair.
