Back In Singapore

A poem written for Kenneth Wee

The morning mountains

awaken my mind

and I ride upon the back

of their majesty

across the waters of time

back to when

the waves of my youth

fell upon the shore

in Singapore.

God called to Abraham

In a city called Light,

a light just like the darkness

of the deepest night,

like the pupils

of the eyes of death...

the dark, dark spirit

of an idol’s breath

Abraham heard the voice

of God's love so wise

and smashed

the idols of his father’s eyes,

ending the commerce

of his father’s lies

Abraham’s father’s idol store

was not to be found in Singapore

In Singapore

the Galilean Messiah

and the Buddha met

and both their eyes from suffering

were warm and wet

It was there on the hillsides

where I kept being born

and could not forget

The spirit of Buddha came carried,

elevated upon a wisdom throne

by dark sorrow demons

draped in jewels and bone

Like Abraham’s father,

the gold Buddha's eyes

were darkly shining and bold

My Singapore soul felt so quiet and old

The spirit of the Galilean messiah

came like a pacific breeze,

a baptism of mist,

received by degrees...

He came and spoke softly,

like a child who warms hearts

He came and knocked gently

and set my family apart

He knocked lightly on my door

back there in Singapore

God is beyond being and God is here

God is such love,

that worlds quake in fear!

Only One Judge

sits upon the great throne!

The unknowable One,

who makes Himself known!

God is one both above and below

The Infinite Eternal Light

made a scrub bush to glow

This is the song of light

that Israel heard

And could not believe,

yet her forgiveness occurred!

How can I hear this?

How can I  sing?

If my own soul is not one,

when I face the great King?

How can I return

to make myself whole

to gather the pieces

of my Singapore soul?

There is one God!

Haven’t we heard?

It is in the song of the whale,

and in the song of the bird.

It is in the song of the wolf,

and in the song of the shore,

the song I heard in the mist

back in Singapore.
