A Poem On The Beginning

In the beginning the God of Israel

created all that is the heavens to perfection

with all that is the earth

Then the earth

failing to rise to the occasion

was heavy-hearted and broken

and the face of creation was dark

The whole universe was grey and black

And the Spirit of God

was blowing softly

upon the endless rivers of its tears

Then the God of Israel said

Let there be

the light of mercy and kindness and love

and the eyes of the earth twinkled

And the God of Israel high above his heavens

saw the twinkling in the eyes of the earth

and was pleased

And the God of Israel distinguished the light

twinkling in the earth's eyes

from the darkness of creation's face

And God called the light

twinkling in the eyes of the earth

the day of Israel

and the darkness upon the creation's face

he called the restful nighttime of sleep

And the evening of the beginning

and the morning of the beginning

was one perfect day

Then the God of Israel commanded

that the expanse of his temple of prayer should be built

in the midst of creation's rivers of tears
