1. For와 during
어떤 일이 얼마나 오랬동안 계속되고 있는지를 이야기할 때 "for + 기간"을 사용합니다:
for tow hours for a week for ages
We watched television for two hours last night.
Ann is going away for a week in September.
Where have you been? I've been wating for ages.
Are you going away for the weekend?
언제 일이 벌어졌는지를 이야기할 때 "during + 명사"를 사용합니다. 일이 벌어진 기간을 이야기하는 것이 아닙니다:
during the movie during our vacation during the night
I fell asleep during the movie.
We met a lot of nice people during our vacation.
The ground is wet. It must have rained during the night.
일반적으로 시간을 의미하는 단어(the morning / the afternoon / the summer)는 in 또는 during와 함께 사용합니다:
It must have rained in the night. (or ... during the night.)
I'll call you sometime during the afternoon. (or ... in the afternoon.)
during은 어떤 일이 얼마나 오래 계속되었는지를 이야기할 때는 사용하지 않습니다:
It rained for three days without stopping. (not during three days)
during과 for의 비교:
I fell asleep during the movie. I was asleep for half an hour.
2. During과 while
비교해 보세요.
during + 명사:
명사
I fell asleep during the movie.
We met a lot of interesting people during our vacation.
Robert suddenly began to feel sick during the exam.
while + 주어 + 동사:
주어 + 동사
I fell asleep while I was watching TV.
We met a lot of interesting people while we were on vacation.
Robert suddenly began to feel sick while he was taking the exam.
While에 대한 추가 예문:
We saw Amanda while we were waiting for the bus.
While you were out, there was a phone call for you.
Tom read a book while I watched TV.
미래를 이야기할 때, while 뒤에는 will 대신 현재 형을 사용합니다:
I'll be in Toronto next week. I hope to see Tom while I'm there. (not while I will be there)
What are you going to do while you are wating? (not while you will be waiting)
