2. (be) supposed to
경우에 따라서 "it is supposed to ..."는 "it is said to ..."와 같은 의미로 사용됩니다:
Let's go and see that movie. It's supposed to be very good. (= It is said to be very good)
Mark is supposed to have kicked a police officer. (= he is said to have kicked)
그러나 경우에 따라서 supposed to는 다른 의미를 가집니다.
Something is supposed to happen = it is planned, arranged, or expected:
위와 같은 구조를 사용하면, 어떤 것이 1) 계획되거나, 2) 일정이 짜이거나, 3) 기대된다라는 의미를 가집니다. 그리고 경우에 따라서는 실제로 일어 나지 않은 계획, 일정 또는 기대에 대한 표현으로도 사용됩니다:
I'd better hurry. It's almost 8:00 and I'm supposed to meet Ann at 8:15. (= I have arranged to meet Ann; I said I would meet her)
The train was supposed to arrive at 11:30, but it was an hour late. (= the train was expected to arrive at 11:30 according to the schedule)
두 번째 문장을 보면 기차가 11:30까지 오기로 되어 있었는데, 안 왔지요. 이처럼 일정은 있었는데, 일정대로 되지 않은 것을 표현할 때도 이 구조를 사용합니다.
아래와 같은 구조에서 "supposed to"는 허락되지 않았다라는 의미로 사용됩니다:
You're not supposed to do something = it is not allowed or advisable for you to do it:
You're not supposed to park your car here. (= You're not allowed to park here)
Mr. Bruno is much better after his operation, but he's still not supposed to do any heavy work. (= his doctors have advised him not to)
