1. both/neither/either
both/neither/either는 대상이 두 개일 때 사용합니다. 이 단어들은 명사와 함께 사용할 수 있습니다(both books, neither book 등):
Both restaurants are very good. (not the both restaurants)
Neither restaurant is expensive.
We can go to either restaurant. I don't care. (= one of the other, it doesn't matter which one)
2. both of / neither of / either of
이것들은 "Both of / neither of /either of + the/these/my/Tom's" 형식으로 표현합니다. Both of the restaurant, both of those restaurant과 같이 활용합니다. "both of restaurants" 형식으로는 표현하지 않습니다:
Both of these restaurants are very good.
Neither of the restaurants we went to was (or were) expensive.
I haven't been to either of those restaurants. (= I haven't been to one or the other)
both 뒤에 of는 생략할 수 있습니다:
Both my parents are from Michigan. or Both of my parents ...
"Both of / neither of /either of + us/you/them" 형식도 사용할 수 있습니다:
(두 사람에게 이야기할 때) Can either of you speak English?
I asked two people the way to the station, but neither of them knew.
both 뒤에 us/you/them이 오면 반드시 of를 사용해야 합니다:
Both of us were very tired. (not Both us were ...)
neither of 다음에 오는 동사는 단수와 복수 모두 사용할 수 있습니다:
Neither of the children wants (or want) to go to bed.
3. 기타 활용
both/neither/either는 단독으로 사용할 수 있습니다:
I couldn't decide which of the two shirts to buy. I liked both. (or I liked both of them.)
"Is your friend British or American?" "Neither. She's Australian."
"Do you want tea or coffee?" "Either. I don't care."
both ... and ... :
neither ... nor ... :
either ... or ... :
Both Ann and Tom were late.
I was both tired and hungry when I got home.
Neither Liz nor Robin came to the party.
She said she would contact me, but she neither wrote nor called.
I'm not sure where he's from. He's either Spanish or Italian.
Either you apologize, or I'll never speak to you again.
4. 대상의 개수에 따른 활용
either/neither/both (두 개의 대상) 와 any/none/all (둘 이상의 대상)의 비교:
There are two good hotels in the town. You can stay at either of them.
We tired two hotels. Neither of them had any rooms. / Both of them were full.
There are many good hotels in the town. You can stay at any of them.
We tried a lot of hotels. None of them had any rooms. / All of them were full.
