To Test or Not to Test: Psychological Considerations Associated with Genetic

Testing in Young Adults

By Victoria Stein, Psy.D.

Abstract

As genetic research continues to advance, new findings about genetic markers for particular diseases are readily available. Genetic testing is becoming a routine procedure in medical treatment and decision-making. In some cases, advanced knowledge can impact behaviors with the potential to reduce the likelihood of disease progression, while in other cases there are more limited options. Knowledge gained from predictive genetic testing has far-reaching psychological consequences too. This study aims to investigate the psychological factors that are associated with genetic testing in young adults who are considering whether or not to undergo this process. A qualitative research design was conducted in which participants were asked to describe their feelings and experiences about genetic testing. This paper will encourage further research into the experience and psychological impact of those considering genetic testing and ultimately provide knowledge to those caring for the psychological well-being of people with predispositions to heritable disease.
