October 2015: Linnea Mavrides, Psy.D.

Linnea Mavrides finished our PsyD program in 2010. Her dissertation was entitled Countertransference, Process, and Outcome in Psychodynamic Child Therapy. While a student in our program, Dr. Mavrides earned awards for her academic excellence, and maintained the highest GPA in her class. She currently specializes in pregnancy and childbirth, health, and trauma as they relate to psychological practice. Dr. Mavrides is extremely passionate about working with women who want to become pregnant, are pregnant, or have infants. She is also a trained childbirth doula, which she is not currently practicing, but this has helped her learn even more about the child birthing process and related psychological issues. She also works with women prenatally and postnatally to prevent, diagnose, and treat Post-Partum Depression. Dr. Mavrides uses many different types of therapeutic interventions. She conducts Individual Therapy, as well as Mother-Infant Therapy and Couples Therapy. She also practices Group Therapy, and offers a number of support and psychotherapy groups for people throughout the pregnancy process, as well as for individuals who have lost partners through suicide. She cu

rrently runs her private practice out of both a Manhattan office and a Brooklyn office. Dr. Mavrides has also served as an adjunct professor at her alma matter, LIU Post PsyD program, since 2011, teaching courses such as History and Systems of Psychology and Internship Preparation.

When discussing her time at LIU Post, Dr. Mavrides said: “My time at LIU exposed me to so many different aspects of psychology that I was interested in, some of which I had always known that I wanted to pursue and many that I didn't. When I had my son after my first year in the program (now 10), I tapped into a new area of pregnancy, postpartum, and maternal psychology. I took the opportunity of class research assignments to learn about the literature and clinical practice with this population, and I even got certified as a childbirth doula. All the while, though, I was continuing on with my classes and clinical training with various populations and specifically focusing on severe mental illness, which gave me a lot of skills to use and develop as I progressed through my career. I was lucky enough to get an internship at the Brooklyn VA, which catapulted me into a career in health psychology and trauma and eventually into a private practice focused on these same issues. Looking back, I am very glad that I attended LIU Post; between the highly experienced, intelligent, and accessible faculty and the opportunity to learn both CBT and psychodynamic techniques, I don't think I could have found a better launching program for my interests and goals. I'm excited to have just opened my second private practice office, so I am now seeing patients in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, and primarily seeing women and couples who are trying to become parents, anticipating childbirth, or adjusting to new parenthood. I also really enjoy staying connected to Post by serving as a clinical supervisor, committee member for CCEs and dissertations, and an adjunct teacher.”
