Nicolas Cavuoto, Psy.D.

Dr. Nicholas Cavuoto graduated the LIU Post PsyD program in 2004 and has worked with a wide array of underserved populations in his therapeutic career. While at Post he externed in the outpatient departments at both the Schneider Children’s Hospital and the Zucker Hillside Hospital, while also working on a research team at the New York State Psychiatric Institute conducting semi-structured interviews with individuals diagnosed with substance abuse and mental illness. He then did his internship at Stony Brook University’s Counseling Center. Following his internship, he did a one-year fellowship at the Stony Brook University Wo/Men’s Center, a unique clinical/psych outreach program that provided a psychodynamic lens on issues including gay and lesbian relationships, gender roles, relationship violence, and body image issues. He completed his dissertation on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy with male batterers with Dr. Jill Rathus after having worked with Dr. Rathus for several years conducting DBT groups for patients with BPD. Dr. Cavuoto was one of the first to examine the use of DBT with a partner violent population and presented this work as part of a moderated panel at AABT/ABCT. After his time at Stony Brook he spent four years as coordinator of the intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program at Long Beach Reach. In 2006, he went into private practice at Family Psychology of Long Island in Oakdale, NY. In his practice he specializes in couples counseling and insight-orientated individual and group therapies. In regard to his work with couples, Dr. Cavuoto also works with couples experiencing violence or addiction. He is also certified by The NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (OASAS) to provide DWI evaluations for the NY State DMV.
