ADHD - Child Mind

Post Doctoral Fellowship, ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center

The Child Mind Institute is seeking highly motivated candidates for a post-doctoral fellowship program in our ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center. Candidates must demonstrate experience and commitment to behavioral therapies and evidence-based parent training protocols. Fellows are expected to provide treatment to children and adolescents, perform semi-structured clinical intakes and assessments, provide parental support and education, become engaged in community outreach and advocacy efforts, and participate in multidisciplinary team case conferences.

The Child Mind Institute is the nation's only independent nonprofit institution exclusively dedicated to transforming mental healthcare for children and adolescents. We are committed to finding more effective treatments for childhood psychiatric and learning disorders, building the science of healthy brain development, and empowering children and their families to get help, hope, and answers. We are located in midtown Manhattan in a state-of-the-art child and family friendly facility. In addition, the Child Mind Institute has robust research initiatives and many comprehensive public education programs including childmind.org and Speak Up for Kids.

The ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center is one of three Centers that comprise the expanding clinical program of the Child Mind Institute. The Center is dedicated to giving children and families the tools and support they need to manage their attentional and behavioral difficulties in home, school and community settings. Clinicians in this center work intensively with parents and teachers, often utilizing intervention approaches such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Parent Management Training (PMT), and Teacher-Child Interaction Therapy (TCIT).

Fellowship

The ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center offers a two-year, full-time postdoctoral fellowship, which begins on July 1, 2014. For the right candidate, we may be able to be flexible on the start date. Fellowship training focuses on the accurate diagnosis and use of evidence-based treatment for children, adolescents, and their families, with experiences including clinical work, didactics, and exposure to research.

Clinical Opportunities

The ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center offers an extraordinary opportunity for a qualified clinician to receive structured post-doctoral training in a unique, innovative academic setting. Fellows will carry a full caseload of patients and gain experience with a variety of disorders including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and other disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs). Emotional dysregulation is common among our patients, so candidates should also expect to provide treatment to children and adolescents with comorbid anxiety and mood disorders. Treatment will consist of behavioral and cognitive-behavioral frameworks using evidence-based protocols and evidence-driven decision making throughout the treatment process. Fellows will be expected to achieve significant outcomes through treatment and will perform a considerable amount of parent and teacher training.

Didactics

As a component of the training experience, the post-doctoral fellow will also participate in a variety of learning experiences at the Child Mind Institute. Specifically, fellows will attend a weekly multidisciplinary case conference, as well as clinical meetings with center staff. Fellows will also be given the opportunity to supervise externs and volunteers and give presentations at schools and local community organizations. Additionally, there will also be opportunities to collaborate with website writers on specific topics for the Child Mind Institute website and with other services within the Child Mind Institute. Training is available in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and other evidence-based models of parent training and behavioral intervention, in addition to educational interventions such as reading or writing remediation and Cogmed working memory training.
