Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in Clinical Psychology

Overview

Lenox Hill Hospital – Outpatient Center for Mental Health anticipates two openings for post-doctoral fellows in our new clinical psychology fellowship for the 2015-2016 academic year. The fellowship is designed for those seeking careers in clinical practice settings that promote interdisciplinary collaboration when working with individuals and families presenting with a wide range of issues. We offer lifespan experience with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. The fellowship prepares trainees for professional psychology practice at an advanced level of competence in a substantive traditional area of practice, clinical psychology.

The Hospital

Lenox Hill Hospital is part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. The nation's third largest, non-profit, secular healthcare system, the North Shore-LIJ Health System cares for people of all ages throughout Long Island, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island, a service area encompassing more than seven million people. Eligibility

Candidates for the post-doctoral fellowship must have completed the course of study and dissertation defense in a PhD or PsyD doctoral program in clinical psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), completed an APA-accredited Doctoral Psychology Internship Program, and have demonstrated interest and experience in evidence-based treatment. Candidates must be eligible for the New York State Limited Permit in Psychology and are expected to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology during the first six months of the training year.

Fellowships are one-year, from July 2015 - June 2016. Fellows will be provided with benefits, vacation days, sick days, and personal days. The Fellowship salary is competitive. Fellow responsibilities and supervision will fulfill criteria for the postdoctoral year of experience necessary for psychology licensure in New York State.

The Training Program

The Outpatient Center for Mental Health serves a diverse community representative of New York City in terms of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. People are seen for psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological treatment for situational stressors and chronic mental health issues from all over the five boroughs.

The fellowship in the Outpatient Center for Mental Health is structured to provide fellows with a balance of direct clinical training, supervision, educational programming, and professional development opportunities. Fellows will spend approximately 60% of their time, or 22 ½ hours, in the provision of direct clinical service, with the remaining time comprised of supervision, didactics and non-direct clinical service. Fellows receive intensive supervision, including a minimum of two hours of individual supervision, with additional supervision as needed.

The fellowship program provides the opportunity for advanced training in clinical psychology. Fellows conduct initial evaluations and on-going treatment and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and consultations. Treatment may include individual, group, couples and family therapy. Fellows have the opportunity to gain both breadth and depth in evidence-based assessment and treatment.

Fellows are expected to bring one or more areas of clinical specialization to the interdisciplinary team. They will master two forms of specialized, time-limited, evidence-based psychotherapy (with individual and group components) and provide supervision to trainees and/or didactics to clinical staff. Specializations may include, but are not limited to: work with specific populations like Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender individuals, or specific evidence-based modalities like Dialectal Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Trauma-Focused Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, harm reduction interventions, motivational interviewing, or short-term psychodynamic psychotherapies.

Postdoctoral fellows are offered a half-day in which they will gain experience in supervising psychology practicum students.

Fellows will be required to attend a weekly seminar that focuses on issues of professional development, career development, balancing personal and professional considerations, networking, preparing for licensure, ethical and legal guidelines and dilemmas, the future of psychology, and topics of general interest. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to attend 10 grand rounds per year of their choosing, and may do so in any department in the health care system.

Throughout all aspects of the program, an emphasis is placed on professionalism, reflective practice/self-assessment/self-care, scientific knowledge and methods, relationships, individual and cultural diversity, ethical and legal standards and policies, and interdisciplinary systems. Considerable attention is paid to the individual professional development of the fellow as a psychotherapist (individual, group, couples, and family), diagnostician (achievement, cognitive, functional analysis of behavior, neuropsychological, personality, projective), consultant, clinical-researcher, supervisor, teacher, program innovator and evaluator, interdisciplinary team member, and advocate. The program emphasizes developing competence in working with diverse and underserved populations.
