2022 Movies
My Top Picks
Top Gun: Maverick: A great sequel with most of what made the original film so good.
Avatar: The Way of Water: This was easily the most technologically innovative film of 2022 but I felt that it lost a bit of the emotional sting.
Turning Red: So funny and so much fun. Every character was so well developed.
Adam Project, The: Brilliant, funny and heartwarming Sci-Fi.
Black Adam: A very straightforward story and easy to follow. Full of smoulder.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: Lots of fun and some great visuals
Thor: Love and Thunder: Not as good as the previous Thor, but reasonable fun nevertheless.
Bullet Train: So much better than expected. The trailers should have said it was based on a manga.
Lost City, The: This was a whole lot of fun. Much better than I was expecting.
Uncharted: This wasn't brilliant but it was better than a lot of what was released in 2022.
Notable Mentions ("Surprise" Films)
Turning Red: Completely taken by surprise with this one. One of the best animated films in years.
Three Thousand Years of Longing: A film that I was worried would be too close to Everything Everywhere... and was planning to avoid. I'm so glad I watched it. It was great.
Bullet Train: The trailer for this film put it firmly on my list of films not to watch this year. The only reason that I watched it was that I was on a 10 hour flight and I wanted something that I didn't mind falling asleep in. I stayed awake and loved it.
Black Phone, The: With writing from Joe Hill, I should have expected something special but this still took me by surprise.
Mr. Harrigan's Phone: Proving once again that Stephen King still has it in terms of storytelling.
Black Adam: I wasn't expecting much, so this easily improved on that.
Bad Guys, The: I wasn't expecting much from this but it was terribly funny.
Morbius: I wasn't even going to try watching this film after two failed attempts to watch Venom. I'm glad I did. It was good fun and understandable (which these days is becoming a rarity).
You won't be alone: This was unexpectedly rich and would have been in the "best" category had it not been about 30 minutes too long.
The Biggest Disappointments
Moonfall: This was awful. All they had to do was put together a coherent story and not go over the top with the special effects and they'd have a had another cheesy hit. Instead, it explodes like it's trying to outdo Michael Bay, none of the characters are interesting or relatable, the story goes on way too long and very little of it makes sense.
Nope: I feel like I'm the only person who finds Jordan Peele completely overrated. I partially liked his first film but haven't liked anything since that. I thought Nope might be a turning point. It was, it completely turned me off his films.
Everything Everywhere All at Once: There was a good 45 minute film in here with about 90 minutes of rubbish arty special effects in the middle.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore: I set my expectations as low as possible for this one and it was far worse than I could possibly have anticipated. They need to stop this series.
Batman, The: It's funny that I can watch a 3 hour "blue" movie from James Cameron but I struggle with a three hour "orange" one. I could see what they were trying to do here but I just didn't enjoy it. I have a feeling that I might eventually grow to like this film but right now I don't. It's not necessarily a terrible film but I don't think it's a great one either.
Northman, The: This wasn't terrible. It just wasn't "great" either. It so badly wanted to be Vikings but couldn't quite make the characters likeable enough.
