I'm always interested in upcoming technology - even tech that seems to be heading down a blind alley. This page should contain information about things that are keeping me interested at the moment. Sadly it will probably be out of date a few minutes after being written.
Updated in 2024 but not complete
When I first created this page, AI wasn't even in my list of trends. This is despite my doing it as a major work at university some 20+ years prior. It's amazing how much as changed just in the last few years despite AI having been on the radar for so long,
These days, AI is very much a part of my everyday work and I use it for advice, code, document writing, testing and image creation.
I've been living with APIs for my entire working life. I was playing with Windows APIs in Windows 3.1 so I was already familiar with them. Who knew that they'd expand into such a massive web technology that would bring discrete systems together. OpenBanking APIs have also kept me interested.
Domino REST APIs are particularly interesting to me. Here's an article I wrote in 2025.
Most of my technical life has been spent on collaborative technologies thanks to Notes and Domino, then SharePoint and Teams but it's the cutting edge, like loop, which feels very much like Google's discontinued "wave" project, that piques my interest.
Sadly in this say and age, everyone in IT needs to be a master of security. This means that you should be thinking about security all the time, when you provide access to a system, when you develop, when you are installing a PC or a phone (even one for home or children).
Everything should be zero trust nowadays. So any unsolicited mail, calls or other form of contact must be distrusted until it is proven trustworthy. Every bit of software (and data) needs to be scrutinized for dubious origins and all systems need to be patched and protected with encryption and multi-factor authentication.
...and encryption, well that's a whole extra topic.
These are things that were on my radar previously.
Blockchain (and not necessarily from a purely financial side of things).
Biometrics
Nanotech
Assistive technologies
