A British author with a penchant for strong gore and sex, Graham also moonlights as a historical romance writer and as a sex instructor. It makes for a very weird combination. He also frequently writes about American Indians.
I first discovered Graham Masterton is my local library while looking for Stephen King substitutes (I'd read them all). I can't remember which book I read first but I think it was Pariah. The one thing that really struck me about Graham Masterton (other than the sex scenes which made Stephen King look like he came from a nursery - I was only fourteen at the time), was the downbeat endings. Really really downbeat and unexpected. The ending of Tengu in particular wiped me out.
One really funny thing about Graham Masterton is that he has an incredible range compared to most horror writers. He writes a lot of thrillers, manuals and romantic/epic fiction. I used to laugh when I worked in a library and the elderly ladies would come in and tell me how much they enjoyed reading "Solitaire" or "Railroad". Then I'd see them leaving with a copy of Tengu or Sacrifice under their arms... I wonder how many heart failures that caused.
Oh, and one final memory. The cover of Tengu (the face on the banner) actually made it hard for me to sleep at 14.
A very different kind of Masterton book but one that reminds you that he can still surprise you.
Anything in boldface is still outstanding (I haven't read it).
