Anxiety and Autism

Anxiety is one of the most frequent co-conditions of autism and some consider it to be the most powerful influence.

Anxiety presents in many different ways for people on the spectrum. It affects social skills by preventing autistic people from approaching conversations in a balanced manner because it always tips things in favour of others in the conversation. This means that it affects structured conversation, such as job interviews and performance appraisals badly resulting in a poor workplace experience.

For some people on the spectrum, anxiety is so overwhelming that it makes it impossible for them to venture outdoors. For others, it manifests as change resistance making it difficult for them to deviate from set routines.
