I think that RPGs are my absolute favourite genre. I seem to play more of them than any other type of game. The thing I love most about RPGs is that the longer you play them, the better (artificially) you become. So you might still be hopeless at working the controls but where in the beginning you were being killed by the local crabs (yes, Morrowind), after days, weeks or months of playing, you can now walk around with magic armor, holding a sword that is permanently on fire and a single hit can kill a giant.
It's hard to pick favourites from the Classic Genre and most of them are dim memories. They were great fun but going back to play them again is never going to happen. They're so long and the game mechanics, while good at the time are painstaking in today's world.
Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
This was the first RPG that I ever played and I had no manual, no grounding, no understanding of what an RPG was. It took me two years (and a cheat or two).
Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic
This game proved that not all RPGs had to be medieval. A brilliant game and a sequel 20 years in the making/fixing.
Neverwinter Nights I & II
These were the games that got me back into RPGs after I stopped playing games for years to concentrate on work/study.
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Yes, Skyrim is everyone's favourite but Morrowind came along at a critical juncture for me (just after Neverwinter).
Modern RPGs haven't changed much at all. They've become a little more "in-your-face" action orientated and the graphics have improved out of sight but the general game mechanics are mostly still the same. One of the best features of modern games is that many of them offer both a super-hard mode (which I avoid) and a "casual gamer" mode, which is better for people like me who want to focus on the story.
Hogwarts Legacy
This game was an absolute joy to get into. Harry Potter always seems to work well as a game but this one was phenomenal.
Mass Effect 1-3
I left these games for years not realizing that they were almost a modern remake of Kotor. Amazing storytelling and fun games.
Fallout 4
I'd tried to get into each of the various fallout games without success but this was the one that finally got me in, and then I was able to go back and play 3.
Star Wars - Jedi Fallen Order
Star Wars games are usually good but this one is particularly fun. There's a good story and it really does feel like you're immersed in the SW Universe.
I have a T-Shirt that says, "I'm not procrastinating, I'm just doing side-quests" . That usually how I do things. I level up so much by doing every single side-quest that by the time I meet the ultimate baddie, they're usually a pushover. I love that RPGs allow me to compensate for my terrible gaming skills with experience.
