It's no secret that one of my favourite types of games are/were adventure games though the modern definition of adventure games isn't quite so much to my liking (Telltale excepted). The first adventure game I ever played was King's Quest II: Romancing the Throne. It had me hooked for life. I followed that up with Leisure Suit Larry I: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards and followed the Sierra track for years until LucasArts started producing classics like Loom, Indiana Jones, Sam and Max and Monkey Island.
The modern versions of adventure games range from Visual Novels with limited or no choice, through to Finder/Puzzle Games, which can be good, to classic (retro style games) and more action orientated adventure games all the way up to semi role-playing games. It's a slippery genre to explain.
It's too hard to pick a favourite, especially as Adventure games are very much games you usually only play once. I'm picking four good ones from the classics and then I'll pick four diverse modern favourites.
Notable because it was one of the first (of very few) full-fledged "video" games and it was very well written.
The Dig (LucasArts)
A Sci-Fi Game with an amazingly good story. This one really should have been a movie.
King's Quest VIII: Mask of Eternity (Sierra)
It's very hard to pick the best King's Quest game but this one at least didn't kill you as much as some.
Noctropolis (1994)
It's hard to explain why this game was so good. The story was quite good but there was also a whole, dark fantasy feel to it
These are more recent adventure games that really caught my attention.
The Walking Dead
Very fast moving and with a very strong story, the Walking Dead series makes you care about the characters
Martha is Dead
A very creepy point and click modern game with a lot of atmosphere and emotion.
Doki Doki Literature Club!
The first visual novel I ever played, not necessarily the greatest but the one that showed what they could do.
Doctor Who - Blood of the Cybermen
This, and the other games like it are easily the best Doctor Who games ever produced. Action packed and fun to play.
And by completed. I mean, have finished all the way to the end, in most cases getting 100% of the goodies or bonuses along the way.
