Best of 2010

Let’s look at some of the greatest games of 2010, the year past!

One of the most original of 2010 is Singularity, a game that seemed like a morphed Half Life 2 and played like nothing that words can justify.

Best sports game (and I would count racing as a sport for simplicity) easily goes to Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. The Burnout creators took the series back to where fans loved it and evolved it from there, making a very pure and satisfying racing game.

Best shooter game is Call Of Duty, Black Ops. You shouldn't be surprised, but Halo offered tough competition this year (haha ODST vs Modern Warfare 2 last year. No contest). Black Ops offered so much more content for its buck, having decent single-player, amazing multiplayer, and the Nazi Zombie mode.

Best platforming game is New Super Mario Bros Wii, with a very close second being Super Mario Galaxy 2. The deciding factor here was level design, and New Super Mario Bros Wii just blew my mind in that, and in Co-Op (even if all the characters DID bounce awkwardly off each other, causing for lots of rage).

Best fighting game easily goes to BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. It was confusing to follow storyline-wise, but it was a whole lot of fun. Plus, it wasn't quite the year for tough fighting game competition.

Best new technology of 2010 is...non-existent! 3D TVs are too expensive, the Kinect turns a quite hardcore-oriented market into a "family experience" (what?), and the Playstation Move is just generally bad. Every company (except for Nintendo who actually didn't deliver new tech this year) should be proud. And by proud I meant beat repeatedly.

Best story goes to Alan Wake. It's probably no surprise, since it is one of the only games that bases gameplay on story and atmosphere alone.

Glitchiest game goes to Red Dead Redemption. The reason I haven't pumped out a review on the game that is long since seen as the best open-world game ever is because I seem to be having problem finding a working copy! My horse will go through the ground, other horses, sometimes buildings, but he never advances far enough to actually advance the story. It's kind of a pain. That glitch renders my game unplayable, so I can only imagine the other glitches found.

Finally, best game of 2010, the absolute must-buy of the year goes to...Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit! Its exciting cop chases and the breathtaking car races were one thing, but Autolog introduced a whole new aspect. The instant-challenge of a friend adds major competition and replay value, and the great online only added to the online experience.

A very close second would be Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver, which rekindled the series for old fans and introduced new fans to the remake of the generally accepted greatest Pokemon games ever.

A very close third goes to Call Of Duty: Black Ops, for too many reasons to even begin naming. When I reviewed Black Ops, I probably reviewed it too harshly, since it is all and all absolutely the greatest in the long running series.
