I am NAKAGAWA Katsushi, an associate professor at Yokohama National University, Institute of Urban Innovation (I was born in 1975 and got a Ph.D. from Kyoto University, Japan in 2008).

I am doing research on History of Sound in the Arts, now mainly interested in the genealogy of “sound art” and the comparative analysis on the situation of Sound Art in Asian countries.

I started by doing research on History of Cagean experimental music and “sound art.” After my Ph.D. dissertation, I began my research on the development of sound art in Japan (some of which were done with my collaborate researcher KANEKO Tomotaro), and Sound Studies (which were resulted in the book about the general history of sound media and the translation of The Audible Past by Jonathan Sterne). Hereafter, I plan to continue the genealogy of “sound art” and the comparative research on the situation of Sound Art in Asian countries.

My main interest resides basically in the history and function of sound in the arts and music in the culture.
