Sandra’s Spring Farm Hike
April 12, 2011
A day at Sandra’s farm and a visit to the Big Belly Hunt Club is always eagerly anticipated. We rendezvoused early that morning in the big field across from Ivor Furniture and caravanned to the farm. Parking, bathroom breaks and pre-hike photos were quickly accomplished for the adventurers (Sandra, Sandy B, Ellis, Marti, Helen, Jean, Bruce and Margaret J, Vic and Margaret P, Jane O, Ed and Jane M, Kama, Lou, Natalie, Bob A, Bob M, Bob S, Carl, Mark, Mary, Steve, Phyllis and Dale, Mike and Dewey) and we started down the dirt road to the tenant farmhouse. Along the way we were joined by late arrivals Julie and Linda with their four-legged companions Mia, Sophia and Sadie. Temperatures were mild and the sky a bit overcast as we trotted along. We met a little Princess at the farmhouse and she accompanied us to the end of the field where we encountered a seemingly mild-mannered Angus cow. Her look of surprise and dismay at our group seemed to suddenly focus on Sandy B and with a baleful look she charged poor Sandy with all the vehemence of a runaway locomotive. Though Sandy has never been to Spain (that I know of) she executed a magnificently graceful turn using her hiking poles to fend off the attacking beast. I thought sure that bovine was going to toss Sandy up in the air but fortunately this did not happen. Bruce bravely placed himself between the vicious varmint and the rest of the group until we had all safely passed out of the danger zone. The rest of the hike was pretty uneventful compared to that. The day warmed and the dogs found every pond and puddle to cool off in. Bruce found a tree to climb at our lunch spot. (See if you can spy him in one of the photos!) Bob A. would have climbed the tree too but he didn’t want to give up his lunch seat in the boat. Some rain drops fell as we headed back to the hunt club. Helen won the Tuesday Group fashion award for her pink umbrella which matched her pink outfit.
Back at the Big Belly Hunt Club we were treated to an ice cream feast by Sandra. There were gallons of ice cream, bunches of bananas, cookies, nuts, coconut, sprinkles, fudge, caramel, whipped cream, and other stuff that I can’t remember. It was all really good. We ate on the back deck and talked about how lucky we all are to have each other as friends. Then the rain came and we packed up and called it--another great day for the Tuesday Group!
