6th Annual TriathlonSept. 18, 2012
One hundred percent chance of rain, 35 to 40 m.p.h. winds and a tornado is that all. Sounds like a typical Tuesday for our outing. We had 25 to gather at Little Island City Park there in Sandbridge on a windy, sunny morning. You had to hold onto your bike there in the parking lot or the wind would lift it off the ground. This still didn’t stop the group from doing the 6th Annual Triathlon. At one time we thought we would need to tie Dottie to Robb just so she wouldn’t be picked up and be blown to the land of Oz.
We had Bill B., Ken, (the waterman) Jane & John O., Marti & Ellis M., Margaret & Vic P., Bob M., Carl A., Bob A., (the great partner) Ron L., Bob S., Dottie A., Jea C., John F., J P, Gail K., Robb W., (the anchor) Phyllis N., Katrina R., Judy & Ed W., and last Margaret & Bruce J. what a turnout !
The winds were strong blowing into our faces on the ride through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, but stopping 2 or 3 times, helped to keep the group together. Reaching the state park border, there on the gravel road, the winds stopped their blowing and the ride got easier. As we reached Barbour Hill Boat Dock I could see that we were not going to be able to paddle the 2 miles that we have done in the past. Plan number #2, divide the group into groups of 2’s and have a race there at Barbour Hill. I would station myself out into the bay and each team had to paddle out to me and return to the boat dock and switch to their partner and he/she had to paddle around me and the first to reach the dock would win. Margaret and Bob did win but by a slim margin. Their prize is in the mail to be awarded at a later date. Be sure to look at Bill’s pictures & movies and you can get the whole story, why Vic & Dottie never had a chance of winning. Sorry, Vic & Dottie.
Leaving Barbour Hill Boat Dock we pedaled (not Paddle) down to False Cape Landing and had our 2 mile hike out to the beach where some jumped into the water looking for a giant crab. (as you can see in Bills pictures they found it) We ate a snack and took a 30 min. break and then headed towards the park’s office and gift shop. We stayed here another 30 min. and then got back on our bikes and pedaled back to little Island Park. The day was not over by a long shot, 23 of us drove to Pungo Pizza and had a great meal and some had ice cream. Another great Tuesday Outing for our group, thanks to all for coming.
