Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Hike at First Landing State Park
Sunny and mild spring like weather combined with the inherent appeal of First Landing State Park attracted 34 Tuesday Groupers for a seven mile hike. The group hiked two miles down the Cape Henry Trail from the park visitor center and then took a well defined but unnamed and unmarked path to the northeast section of the park. Along the path the group paused at the “Inscription Tree” and extinguished a fire left smoldering at the base of the tree. Bob Adkisson, the group’s firefighting expert, supervised the activity from a vantage point up in the tree. A steep but short climb to the top of a large dune ridge at the end of the path enabled the group to reach a spot providing a good view of the surrounding area, area trails and the Atlantic Ocean. The route back to the visitor center took the hikers to the Long Creek Trail along the Broad Bay area of the park. After the trek, a majority of the group assembled at the CP Shuckers restaurant on Shore Drive for a late lunch.
