Between the Waters Bike Tour and Onancock Creek Kayaking
A bright and sunny day greeted the 20 riders who all turned up on time at the Chesapeake Bay-bridge tunnel Saturday for our bike tour on the Eastern Shore. A few new faces were among the group and introductions were made. One new member Frank was attempting the century ride and had headed straight to Onancock for an early start. The rest of the group was fairly split between 40 and 60 milers.
Upon an unexpected tour of Onancock trying to find the registration area we were all saddled and ready to depart by 10 AM. Jane O was gracious enough to have the only flat tire of the entire day at the start of the ride, what a relief. The sunny weather and the Eastern Shore small towns and farmland lent a beautiful backdrop to the ride. There were a few spills for those who could not get out of their biking clips but the only injury was to their pride.
Most of the group returned home after the ride but 6 stayed on overnight for a kayaking adventure on Sunday which Dennis W had planned. We met for drinks at Mallards on the Onancock Wharf then strolled through the moonlit town for dinner at Blarneys. Another delicious meal was enjoyed the next morning at Janet’s in the General Store before we met Bill our local guide. A few paddlers drove up from Tidewater and met us at the dock along with a few locals. The weather was blustery but the sun kept peeking through the clouds. Bill lead us down Onancock Creek past beautiful waterfront homes, through wetland channels to an island just at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. A great finish to a wonderful weekend. Looking forward to next year’s ride.
