DATELINE: Jamestown Settlement
This year, Virginia was blessed with wonderful Fall colors. 16 Tuesday Group intrepids (Ed, Jane M, Ron, Sue, Vic, Margaret P, Bill R, Bill B, Jim N, Bob S, Carl, Mark C, Sandra C, Katrina, Dick and Phyllis) caught what may be the last of that autumnal canvas on a bike ride from Jamestown Settlement to Colonial Williamsburg and back. The threat of rain never materialized and it was truly a great day to be out along the James.
We celebrated Bill Bill taking his 1,000th group picture. We relented and let Sue L. have some air in her front tire, but only after she had struggled along for 15 miles. Her hubby claims he filled them to 65 lbs that morning …. (sure). We helped the Cheese Shop have record November sales. And the Wythe Candy Shoppe welcomed our hike leader, Doktor Chokolat, as she bought armloads of chocolate squares.
We were asked to be in a movie being filmed behind the Armory, but found out our role would be to stand in front of the cannons & muskets, dressed as Redcoats.
Our sole civic duty was to place a group call to Aellis (waking him from a nap) and wish him speedy recovery from recent surgery. Bill Bill recorded the event as a movie clip on his iPhone and transmitted it to Aellis’ email (where it will sit until he is able to move about and play computer again).
Margaret P. noticed a duck (Cormorant?) catch a fish and we all watched the fish slowly make its way down the duck’s gullet. But that was about the only nature lesson for the trip.
Jane M. learned that the term “rolling hills” is very loosely applied by this group; a warning for any future rides on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
So it was a good day. 20 miles. No traffic. Beautiful fall scenery. Good eats. And lots of good gossip. Best, as we put our bikes back on the cars … it began to sprinkle.
