"You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake! Now me and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block, and replace the piston rings you fried".
Objective: Clean, paint, replace all hoses and some gaskets. Only the valve cover gasket, oil pan , exhaust, intake and a few small gasket were replaced. There was nothing wrong with the motor and the engine had strong compression. So no need to completely re-build it. Just clean and restore the easy stuff. I also dressed up the wire harness to sensors and parts on the engine. This project took me 3 years to do, but I only worked on it when time allowed. Also cleaned the engine bay and spray painted it.
Thanks to my friends who helped!
Engine build? Depends on how you describe it. I really just cleaned and painted everything I could. I've only added bolt-on performance parts; no internals were needed. With the engine out, I sealed off what didn't need to get wet. Then I used a lot of degreaser and high pressured water to clean both the bay and engine. I did keep in mind not to get water inside of motor.
Prep cleaning for paint; I took off as many bolt-on parts as possible. This included all hoses.
I sprayed the intake manifold with VHT wrinkle. The throttle body and various other parts were sprayed with orange anodized paint MC205 at the time. Not a big fan of the orange anodized paint, but I was trying something different.
After everything was taped off, the engine block and parts were spray painted. I kept the timing cover on to protect the timing, and I replaced the cover later.
I bypassed the AC compressor since I dont drive the car that much and I want speed!Because of the underdrive pully the none A/C belt that the parts catalog call for was to long. The belt I found that would work was the 5PK0800 Dayco belt($15.99). The belt tensioner is alomost as far out as it will go to keep tension tight. The belt shorter then this one that they carred at Advance Auto was to short and would not go over the pully.
