3K - On Monday our class marched all around the parking lot finding our shadows, just like the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did this year. Throughout the week our class learned about who, when, where, why, and how different animals hibernate during cold weather. We learned that a hibernating animal is sleeping, or taking a nap, just like they do. We even read about the "Old Bear" who had some pretty interesting dreams during his hibernation one winter. Using paint and crayons, each student created a nest, or burrow, for their hedgehog, or groundhog, to stay safe and warm in during the winter.
4K - This week 4K read the story How to Catch a Groundhog. They then drew a picture of how they would try to catch the Groundhog if they were in the story and accidentally scared him. We also celebrated the 100th day of school and had fun building with clothespins and 100 popsicle sticks.
5K - This week in Math we are learning more about addition and subtraction. On Day 100 we predicted how full our container would be with 100 drops of water, played a "Race to 100" game, we all got to see all the "100" items that the kiddos brought in, and counted to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. It was a fun afternoon! We started our next PLTW topic this week - Sunlight and Weather.
1st grade - We continued our unit on light and sound. On Monday we did an experiment with light and a groundhog's shadow. We made predictions on which side the light would need to come from in order for the groundhog to best see his shadow. Then we tested out our theories with flashlights. Later in the week we went on a scavenger hunt to find sources of light and sound around different parts of the school building. We made note of our observations in our journals.
