3K As a part of PLTW, students learned that matter can take 3 forms: a solid, a liquid, and a gas. They were able to observe that different types of matter can float in water; such as plastic, wood, acorns, and sponges. They also learned that as an item fills with water it may sink. They were able to observe that rocks and shells are the types of matter that sink right away. Students were able to "play" with a gas once it was inside of a balloon. Many students shared how they observed the fog earlier this week on their way to school. Students also participated in an experiment using ice. Using their prior knowledge about weather changes, students hypothesized that the ice cubes would melt as they sat on a table within our classroom. Then during centers, they used a magnifying lens and their hands to see and feel the ice as it changed from a solid to a liquid.
We also finished their lesson on the life cycle of a chicken. Then following directions, and using scissors and glue, they learned how to complete a sequence in 4 parts; egg, hatching, chick, chicken. Each student also designed their own baby bird by painting with a fork, adding a beak, legs, and googly eyes.
4K PLTW 4k successfully coded squares that doubled in size. They were able to look at the pattern in their code and incorporate two "forward" commands between their turn arrows to create a larger square. We were also busy collecting bugs , worms and roly polys on the playground.
5K This week in Math K5 finished their unit on finding patterns counting to 100 and will finish the year identifying and classifying shapes. In Science, we watched a Mystery Science video "How did Cotton Candy get its name?" We worked on our final PLTW project in our Sunlight and Weather unit. We are designing models to reduce the heating effect of the sun. Today we colored tie dye shirts which we will wear on the last day of school.
