3K - We began this week by completing our final experiment in our Healthy Habits unit. After practicing safe hand washing techniques all year, we thought we would check how well we were really doing at "making our germs disappear" each day before snack. Utilizing our GlitterBug Potion provided by PLTW, each student rubbed a little bit all over their hands. We then took turns looking at our hands under a blue light and drawing our observations into our Launch Logs. After using hand wipes and singing our hand washing song, we repeated the process of using the blue light. This time around, students would only see the germs they did not wash away. Most germs were still found between fingers, which was used as a reminder to always wash there too!
Over the next few days we then looked at mixing different liquids together as a part of our Floating and Sinking PLTW unit. Using oil, water, food coloring, and an empty bottle, each student created their own Wave Bottle to take home. This showed them that not all liquids are the same and that they may not mix together. Using dish soap and sponges during Centers seemed to be a favorite of most students, while others really enjoyed using funnels and beakers at the water table.
4K - This week in 4k, students measured the rain captured in their rain gauges 2x! Students also learned about Sally Ride and how she was the first American woman astronaut in space. Students also discussed different things found in space, even names of different planets. They also talked about how we float when in space. Students also watched a video of a real astronaut reading a story from space.
5K - This week the 5K kiddos were demonstrating their weather prediction skills. They partnered up as meteorologists to give the forecast! We also had a visitor from the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative. She read the book, "Drop" about the life of a water drop. Then using a model demonstrated what kinds of things can pollute our waters (dog poop, salt for roads, grass clippings, etc) and showed how all that pollution runs into our rivers and lakes. We are learning how to take care of "Mother Earth."
1st grade - First grade started a fun new chapter in math. We began working with money. We learned about pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We learned how many of each coin it takes to make a dollar and we practiced counting different sums of coins. The other part of the chapter was on telling time. We learned about the differences between analog and digital clocks. We practiced labeling different times of the day on both styles of clocks and we also practiced ordering times in order.
