Sharing One Skin
Armstrong, Jeanette. “Sharing One Skin: The Okanagan Community,” in Jerry Mander and Edward Goldsmith (eds), The Case Against the Global Economy. San Francisco, CA, Sierra Club Books, 1996. Pp 460-470.
What I learned reading this summary was that within all these 4 aspects of ourselves: the physical self, emotional self, thinking-intellectual self, and spiritual self. The physical self holds a special place in our lives, we depend on the environment for our survival. The emotional self helps connect us to a larger existence, it shapes how we see the world and what is important for us. Then, our intellectual self helps our ability to think creatively and to develop knowledge skills for new problems. Another thing could be moments and thoughts being triggered. Lastly was our spiritual self, helping to maintain a balanced community by connecting with their community and learning who they are and where they come from. Learning their tradition, hearing and interpreting all knowledge around them, and being able to think and store information. “Forming our communities, and it implies what our relationships are” (Armstrong p.462). The more they educate themselves about their tradition, the better they will understand their traditions and what their relationship is within their community.

And I went to school
Suina, Joseph “And I went to school” memories of a pueblo childhood,”. New Mexico Journal of Reading, Winter 1985, Vol. V, No.2.
Joe Suina, a Cochiti boy who lived with his grandmother and who attended boarding school. This was Suinas first experience of boarding school, it took him weeks to get adjusted to the lifestyle. He was forced to leave his Indian culture at home, adjusting to only speaking English. He did not like being away from home and family; he felt embarrassed, had anxiety trying to speak the English language, felt ashamed of what he was becoming, and not being able to practice his culture. He had encountered the lifestyle of the white life, and the older he got further he felt away from what he was so much a part of. He longed for his family, tradition, dances, and culture, but had noticed the lifestyle of the white men was taking over his life during the time he spent at the boarding school.

Is Parenting Different in Mexico
Bracho, R. (2022, December 1). Is parenting different in Mexico.https://www.expatinsurance.com/articles/is-parenting-different-in-mexico
Parenting in Mexico is an important responsibility that in Mexico all children are taught to respect their parents, behave in public, and learn that "if you teach your children that family is forever, and not in a sense of once a year, then they'll also feel more connected to you during the years that they lived with you." Children in Mexico are an important piece in deciding whether it is work-related in a way. Children are allowed to be outside and just be left alone, letting them be kids. Which gives the parents more of a relaxing moment. "Parents care and don't let the iPad do the babysitting." Females in Mexico were more overprotected, and people said they were a bit rough, while others thought it was okay. Parents expected their kids and always taught them to be well-behaved, also included with them being well dressed made families more overprotective-especially of girls.
Personal Connection
Padilla, Regina "Auntie & Me" December 2024
As a child growing up in a household dealing with parental absences, my connection to my topic has a huge impact on my childhood growing up. Living with my auntie and grandpa and siblings without our biological parents around. Dealing with all the parental absences, all the emotions, thoughts, of having to go through and just thinking if "you're enough" or wondering if your caregivers "love you". The effects on one's mental and physical health are affected by the parent's actions and their absence in their children's lives. Parents affect them down the road in life, emotionally, physically, and mentally, including through their education.
This topic is strategic not only for my family but also for myself, having to relive this moment. The hardships I had gone through affected me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Going in depth into my topic brings a lot of memories back, and I just have to relive those moments once again. I wanna spread awareness and let my peers understand the pain one could feel due to the absence of a parent. Also, to express that going through this or that has ever been through this type of situation, that you are not the only one growing through parental absences.
