Identity
Armstrong, Jeanette. “Sharing One Skin: The Okanagan Community,” in Jerry Mander and Edward Goldsmith (eds), The Case Against the Global Economy. San Francisco, CA, Sierra Club Books, 1996. Pp 460-470.
In the article, “Sharing One Skin,” by Jeanette Armstrong shares so much emotion about community and language. Armstrong shares what the 4 selves are and it all makes sense, because our heart and mind, body, etc are all different. So reading this article made me self evaluate on how I think with my brain and my heart. The quote “A fire that is not controlled can destroy” is my favorite quote so far because it is realistic and it can have many different perspectives of the meaning. By this I mean people’s perspective on this quote can be different, meaning they know or have been through situations where the “fire was not controlled.” While others may find this quote to be a sign that something is wrong or uncomforting. This quote will reach its right audience because it has a deeper meaning only certain people will search for.
"How Place Names Impact The Way We See Things"
Toastie, B. “How place names impact the way we see landscape.” High Country News: Know the West, 1 May 2022, https://www.hcn.org/issues/54.5/people-places-how-place-names-impact- the-way-we-see-landscape.
Memories and stories are connected to our land as described by B. Toastie in the article, “How place names impact the way we see landscapes". Toastie was describing how Diné spoke Navajo and explained how the family treated their land. The mountains can’t get polluted because that is disrespecting the mountains and their way of life. They cherish their landscapes and the stories those landscapes have. Taking care of her landscapes is like taking care of herself. The quote I enjoy is ‘“I wanted to test myself against El Cap” said Alex Honnold’. I chose this quote because Alex is testing himself and his capabilities. In my opinion this shows courage and shows perseverance towards completing the 3,000-foot cliff. I’d say this quote is inspirational.
"And Then I Went To School"
Suina, Joseph “And I went to school” memories of a pueblo childhood,”. New Mexico Journal of Reading, Winter 1985, Vol. V, No.2.
This reading explained how school can affect your home life. Suina wasn’t lying about things feeling weird because he had to “Leave your indian at home,” leaving it at home is hiding yourself. Suina was strong and didn’t forget about his home or ways of living, but he had to attend school. It affected his identity by making him feel loss or less of a Native American. It also changed his way of thinking because the white man education was being forced onto him. I strongly believe he was holding on to his true self while being made to be someone he was not. Leaving his home slowly made him forget some of his traditional practices, his language was slowly being forgotten as well. School changed his mind and his personality to become someone smart and educated, and white man school wanted no native traits.
Indians of North America
The Porter article was informational and very realistic. I thought this article was beautiful because it is a true story, all true stories are mesmerizing and give a different perspective or vibe to their readers. In life we do and don’t get to do what we want and some of us don’t even get to think about those decisions. When we as human beings get to make our own decisions this can influence people who don’t have a voice and then they can start making decisions for themselves. In the past we never got that choice to decide what clothes we wanted to wear or what language we wanted to speak which is diabolical since we had our own language from the beginning. This article just explained a more informational story on the Relocation Act and how it became our Native American History; This article was very empathetic too!
Wiley Blackwell.Adelphi Psych Medicine Clinic. “The History of Art Therapy.” Adelphi Psych Medicine Clinic, 5 July 2017, adelphipsych.sg/the-history-of-art-therapy/.
Within this article PSYCH MED included statements about Art helping children's development. This statement, “As more ground was gained in the field of education and approaches used in child psychotherapy.” This is very important in a child's growth because they can develop some of the five senses we humans have. Touch and sight would be the two senses that can develop from child art therapy. I think it’s important to have those fields of education to support all children who use art to express themselves. Especially because children are sensitive and so important because they have their whole lives ahead of them, and many years to fulfill.

The history of Art therapy is neverending. By this I mean, art therapy is past, present, future. Art therapy helps anyone and sometimes people don’t know they are using art as therapy. Art can take away stress or add to it but for those that let art take away stress is using art as therapy. While reading this short article my second favorite statement is, “Since prehistoric times, the arts have played crucial roles in human history, development, culture, and consciousness.” Which is an understatement because art helped many humans develop since they were children and allowed them to express themselves in a way they could without using words. As children their drawings or artworks may be messy but it has a meaning for the child and only they can really express their work of art to you. I think people should realize that sometimes children and people will not always express themselves through communication or words, but sometimes a weird shape or drawing can be a painting which does not need a specific color.
Glass, Robert. “Smarthistory – What is art history and where is it going?” Smarthistory, https://smarthistory.org/what-is-art-history/. Accessed 4 November 2024
Art’s history is beyond some researchers' knowledge because art is everything and anything. Today new artifacts from the past still begin to be found today or this year. I strongly agree with this article that today’s beauty standards are “a cultural construct that varies across time and space” It connects beauty and art to cultural construct. In my opinion cultural art is the most memorable because their art is expressing their culture. This article is explaining how art became everything and anything. Art history and future is not defined as art being a painting but being a craft made of beauty.
What is art history? - The Courtauld.
“What is art history? - The Courtauld.” Courtauld Institute of Art, https://courtauld.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/what-is-art-history/. Accessed 8 November 2024.
This article was a history lesson and it really summed up how art came from culture and religion. I think art only came from religion and culture because we felt things towards what we were learning so we created art, when you start really believing something it puts this energy of creativity or movement into your brain or body. This quote is beautiful, “Artworks from the past communicate with us across centuries in a language that is much more mysterious and nuanced than one might first assume.” Art’s history is a cultural construct throughout any universe, emotion, feeling, etc. I agree with the statement, art is how people embrace their feelings and thoughts. Art may be the only outlet we get in life, art can also be the safe place we go to, to calm ourselves down.
“Art Therapy: How African Artists Are Healing through Creativity.”
MoMAA, Editor. “Art Therapy: How African Artists Are Healing through Creativity.” MoMAA, 2 Nov. 2024, momaa.org/art-therapy-how-african-artists-are-healing-through-creativity/.
Within my understanding they use traditional drawings within their art, they never fail to express their culture at the same time. African artists have just a community sometimes; People use art together as well. “It offers a means of addressing mental health and well-being by helping people cope with stress and trauma, manage depression and anxiety, and build resilience. Art Therapy also serves to foster social cohesion and cultural identity, strengthening community bonds, promoting understanding and empathy and preserving cultural heritage.” These two sentences give the readers an understanding of how other people are impacted by Art Therapy.
“Four Reasons Why Art Therapy Is Effective with Older Americans.”
Staff, AATA National Office. “Four Reasons Why Art Therapy Is Effective with Older Americans.” American Art Therapy Association, 18 May 2023, arttherapy.org/blog-art-therapy-with-older-americans/.
There are four reasons given to help readers understand how some elders benefit from Art Therapy, they are “1) Creativity can increase self awareness and promote healthy grieving. 2) Art provides opportunities to voice and express life experiences when words fail. 3) Older individuals may be more open to try new things. 4) Art creates opportunities to focus on abilities and build on strengths.” These four reasons except reason #3 are relatable for readers or people. I excluded reason #3 because young generations have preferences of activities, while elders just want to be happy. Being happy is an essential thing to have to thrive on. Life is short and they make the best of their days due to age, this article is about the beauty of aging. I recommend this article for overthinkers because everyone needs an outlet to live.
Yip, Cynthia. “‘Art Therapy: A Healing Canvas for Cancer Patients and Survivors.’” KITV Island News, 2 May 2024, www.kitv.com/news/art-therapy-a-healing-canvas-for-cancer-patients-and-survivors/article_ac97017a-083d-11ef-a8b7-b3b1d9455381.html.
I learned Art Therapy is very helpful for cancer patients, it helps more people understand themselves. It lets people express their fears about being alone or unfortunately about dying. People in Hawaii prioritize those who feel alone, and it’s beautiful. “Through cancer you go through some darkness and a lot of fear. And for me, I was able to express my fear and all these things on the canvas. It’s a space for me to heal myself to be happy,” Leni Acosta Knight said. That quote is how she started volunteering at Medical Centers, she knew others would be in darkness and fear. I agree that no one should be alone through that. This is a very efficient example of Art Therapy and its benefits of hope.
