The American Indians struggled and suffered tremendously as time was evolving. For instance, in the article, ¨Indians of North America: Conflict and Survival¨ by Frank W. Porter, it went into depth on the history of relations between the Indians and the federal government. For several years, Indians were always viewed as ¨inferior¨ or ¨unequal¨. Many Europeans attempted to change the way of life of Indigenous people, but no matter the cost, American Indians resisted to be treated that way both actively and passively. As Porter stated in the article, ¨They refused to lose their unique identity, to be assimilated into white society.¨ (Porter 9) This specific quote exemplifies the fight they had and not allowing them being told what to do or how they should live their lives. It was until the Self-Determination Act came into play, granting the American Indians the control of their own land and resources. With this being said, ¨As long as American Indians retain power, land, and resources that are coveted by the states and the federal government, there will continue to be a clash of cultures´¨. (Porter 11) The issues that come within the American Indians are mostly underestimated by assumptions. Learning and knowing the history of evolution on how the American Indians were being strep away from their land is a crucial part of our lives.

It is rarely discussed on how many professional athletes struggle with the phases of mental health. As it is described in the article, ¨Respect Athletes Mental Health Needs¨ from a UWIRE Text, it briefly describes one professional athlete´s perspective on her take on mental health. Naomi Osaka is a professional Japanese tennis player who addressed mental health issues such as privacy and the lack of days off. As much as athletes perform to their highest potential, no one realizes the toll it takes on them. When Osaka said, ¨In my case, I felt under a great amount of pressure to disclose my symptoms–frankly because the press and the tournament did not believe me.¨, it made me recognize that there aren't enough people who think this is a serious issue and it's not only for the views or entertainment. While having an athletic career, it requires constant training and conditioning, even on the days off. Learning how to maintain the priorities and having a positive support system will help in the long run.

From the reading, ¨Associations among coach-athlete relationships, psychological safety, and psychological well-being in college athletes¨ by Yanghui Weng and Chen-Cheng, speaks on the importance of mental health being a critical determinant of athletic performance. It also entails the importance of relationships within the coaches and how it can impact players, especially positively. For the larger part of this article, it illustrates all the positive influences that will benefit numerous athletes self esteem, motivation, and resilience. This particularly will promote their daily lives just as well as their athletic performance. ¨In the context of Chinese culture, the coach-athlete relationship is a crucial source of attachment for athletes and has an inevitable impact on athletes psychological well-being.¨ (Peng 2020) I personally found it interesting to read about diverse cultures and how their environment is within the athletic realm.

Exhibiting great control of emotions aids athletes to a better lifestyle. As it is said in the article, ¨Mental Toughness, Latent Profiles On Endurance Athletes¨ by Joanna S. Ziegar and Robert Ziegar, it describes the understanding of psychological underpinnings of mental toughness. With mental toughness comes 8 potential factors, it being, generalized self-efficiency, buoyancy, success mindset, optimistic style, context knowledge, emotion regulation, and attention regulation. In this article, I noticed that there were two main survey questionnaires used to determine the adequately distinguished sub-populations of athletes who need targeted mental skills training. Out of the two surveys each measured different traits. The first survey known as SMTQ, Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire, measured confidence, constancy, and control. The second survey known as PPl-A, Psychological Performance Inventory-Alternative, measured determination and self-belief, with two practices of visualization and positive-cognition. These surveys allowed a more comprehensive insight into an athletes mental toughness.

"Mental Health In Athletes: Breaking The Stigma" is addressing important priorities that involve athletes within an aggressive environment. This article strongly encourages addressing the issues and spreading awareness. More importantly, it touches on how the "outsiders' perspectives view mental health. Some athletes go through mental health battles as others may not be well-aware of or make harsh comments toward the athlete while not knowing what they are going through.

As an athlete there is always one specific person you seek validation from, and that is your coach. From the article, "A Coach's Impact: Word Make or Break A Sport" speaks on the influence of a coach that can affect an athlete in various ways. "Someone could be really talented and good at whatever they're doing, but if they have a bad coach, it would send them down the wrong path." (Haktan) The influence a coach can have an athlete can either be positive or negative, depending on the outlook of the coach. It is really important to consider how a coach's demeanor is towards a player.

Two important key factors, Mental Talent and Mental Empowerment, are based upon the article, "Mental Health In Germany". Mental Talent focuses on the importance of services and support provided to the athletes, whereas Mental Empowerment focuses on the mental health issues. Mental Health in elite athletes were rarely talked about in Germany. It was until 2009 when a German National Football Goalkeeper, Robert Enke, died from suicide. It was caused by depression and the article stated that, "at that time it was becoming increasingly acknowledged that elite athletes are not protected from or immune to mental health disorders." This is where Mental Talent and Mental Empowerment came into play and now currently, there is hope that it could be a further step in learning from other countries and sharing strategies that have already been developed.

The transition to online schooling heavily reduced social activities and endured the cancellation of sport activities, which placed a big impact on an athlete's mental health. As stated in the article, "Impact of Covid-19 Sport Cancellations on the Self Identity and Psychological Distress of High School Student-Athletes", "a passion for sport can be a great motivation for life, so much that it's separation could cause important identity disturbances and psychological distress." Several Canadian athletes dealt with depression by not playing the sport they love while being in what was called "quarantine". Through this time, they found ways to cope and eventually regained their identity outside of sports.

Three different universities share their experience in "Addressing Mental Health Issues in Collegiate Student-Athletes". Drexel University, West Chester University, and Princeton University share their responses which gives the readers a deeper insight on how they navigate and their differences. It was made clear that all universities developed some sort of technology that determines the overview of how many athletes are affected by mental health. Distributing mental health providers is very important stated by Putukian, the University of Princeton, "trying to work with them to create or participate in multidisciplinary teams is ideal because that it is often a collaborative environment through which we all learn from each others." They believe that this method helps other athletes feel less alone as there is support and reassurance provided to them.

As an athlete myself, I have experienced numerous amount of times where mental health either went unheard, or it was just simply too much to handle. Everyone always talks about how sports can be a good coping mechanism and it definitely is, but what about being so worn out the love for the sport slowly drifts away. I have played volleyball ever since I was a little girl. I caught on quickly by tagging along with my mom to her UNM league games. As my talent and competitiveness evolved in the sport, so did my mental well-being as well. Learning how to balance out responsibilities seemed like the easiest part, up until it was time to find time to do the work. Most of the time I'd feel so drained from volleyball up to a point where I wasn't enjoying it like I used to. With so many high expectations to live up to, I constantly overworked myself and always thought it wasn't enough. Being physically worn out is one thing, but mentally worn out is completely different. I surrounded myself with people who supported me and encouraged me, and that truly helped me get through my season. I know of many other athletes who go through the same thing but it's rarely addressed. I want to be able to spread awareness to others who are afraid to speak up for themselves or think it's nothing serious. My purpose is to be a good advocate towards youth athletes who are mentally affected and to provide them with resources that will benefit them in the future.
