It focuses on how they view and practice their community, the importance of the language and how that phrase or how not all words can translate to english. While community is bound to the generational interactions with one another. The responsibility of our next generations on understanding what our native beliefs are and how powerful they can be. In the article they said the Okanagan's say “the body is sacred it is the care of our being, which permits the rest of the self to be” to be the person you are and acknowledge your identity.

Throughout this next reading, memories and stories are connected to our land as described by, B. Toastie in the article, “How place names impact the way we see landscapes,” It was described that western landscapes and their homes are stratified with personal memories, ancestral teachings, mythic events and colonial disturbances. Most of indigenous places are attached to stories that have beauty and strength. Which brings prayer and rules to what not to do and do in your indigenous tradition. White man's way of seeing landscapes is very different compared to us, they look and seek for “power”. They disrespect our ancestors and use their names in ways they should not be doing.

In addition, the article “And then I went to School”, while leaving to school changed Suina’s life. Suina was so full of his native roots with his grandma. He enjoyed his culture and doings it made the feeling of home, home. He loved and listened to his grandma, she said “There is enough for everyone to share; it all comes from above, my child” He learned to appreciate cooperation in nature and with his fellow men early in life. After he left to school and experienced the torture, the bad talk and remarks of “Indains”. The feeling of longing for home and not feeling like himself. In the end he gave up on part of his life, his native culture, to complete the white man's way for the terms of survival. Trying to live both worlds was so painful for him that he had no choice but to do so.

The barriers impeding an open discussion of mental health issues "Include more negative attitudes towards help seeking amongst athletes than the general population, as well as greater stigma and poorer mental health literacy." Many athletic departments have hired mental health professionals and devoted resources to establish programs designed to address the topic of overall well-being. Having to "really understand that wellness is the foundation of performance" said Dr. Tyler. The goal of creating and maintaining the most comprehension of mental health and wellness in athletics. University level has also brought the issue to the mainstream after an extended period of neglect on topics such as anxiety, depression and the sport-school balance for student athletes. The acknowledgement of growing focus on psychological readiness, well being and optimizing human capabilities within the realm of sports. In recent times, the significance of mental health and well being in relation to athletic achievement is on par with that of physical fitness and training. The establishment of robust coach-athlete relationships characterized by trust, support and proficient communication has the potential to satisfy athletes' fundamental psychological needs and cultivate favorable outcomes in terms of mental well being. Moreover, the motivation and passion exhibited by athletes in their pursuit of sports are significant factors in their ability to cope with challenges, develop resilience and mental toughness. The concept of team psychological safety was established by Edmondson through the use of a scale consisting of seven items. The participants made statements such as “If you make a mistake on this team, it is often held against you.” The study focused on a population of athletes residing in Saudi Arabia. Which was important because it demonstrated a comparatively weaker association there by negatively impacting the dynamics between coaches and athletes as well as overall team collaboration.

The importance of a holistic approach that allows young athletes to develop competencies, skills and identities that expand beyond sports into other domains of life. Positive talent development to pursue well being, additionally to personal and athletic development are characterized by a supportive. Psychological safe and empowering environment with knowledgeable coaches and staff. As well as communication and good relationships between various stakeholders. Multiple performance demands in sports and school combine to increase the participants level of perceived stress. A significant amount of time was spent in practice and competition, limiting their ability to keep up with their academic work. Being enrolled at a sports high school increased the demands on athletics, especially at a boarding school because of the added responsibility of managing daily tasks. Including emotional support of their mental health, performance in school and performance in sports, each of which influence each other in a reciprocal manner. As said from a participant “access to support of various kinds, whether it's physical, psychological… you might need to work a lot with mental training, you work a lot with physical training, but you may not think about the mental training, and it’s just as important.” The need to obtain a sustainable lifestyle that balances sports, school and your life.

Jay Corella. March 25, 2024.“The 2024 NCAA realignment impact on student-athletes’ mental health
Mental health remains an important factor for student athletes. Student athletes are at a high risk of depression and anxiety and often operate under conditions of high physical and emotional stress. Additionally, social support could possibly serve as a protective factor, mitigating some of the impact of stressful situations on mental health. To cognitive functioning and physical performance, sleep plays a particularly important role in mental health. Sleep disturbance is a prominent feature in nearly all psychiatric conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, past traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and attention disorders and many others. As future research examines whether these patterns are different for athletes and non athletes; “It is possible that increased time demands would lead to worse sleep among athletes, it is also possible that increased access to support services and other qualities often found in athletes (resilience) may lead to better sleep overall.” As it is clear that sleep plays an important role in mental health among student athletes and should be considered as a potentially modifiable factor for poor mental health for this population.

Personal Connection
Lovato, Thomas "Three Pointer" January 11, 2025
My connection came from the love of playing the game of basketball. I set my topic around athletes which I am one myself. Being an athlete is not easy, everyone seems to think it is. I want our communities and non athletes to realize how much it takes to be one. The schedule and sacrifices an athlete has to make. How positively and negatively family, community and school can affect an athlete’s game. The pressure that's on an athlete's shoulder to make everyone think that you are as perfect as they see you in a game. Everything that comes with pressure and putting in the work can drain an athlete unless dealt the right way. Which includes my own experiences using basketball as peace within death in the family, lack of confidence, noise from the outside and feeling drained. Most things of this sort are not easy to deal with as well as being there for yourself and your team at the same time. The issue of my topic is centered around athletes, whether sports adds or relieves pressure for their mental and physical well being. Athletes are often overlooked by their performance in their sport which is why I want to raise awareness for others who don't want to speak up.
