Color Theory

Our first assignment in this unit was to make a color value scale. We had to choose 2 colors—one primary and one secondary— make 4 tints and 4 shades of each, and paint them in order from lightest to darkest or darkest to lightest, each color on a different scale. I chose blue and orange because I like the color combination. We used acrylic paints and canvas for this project. I think that I did well on the blue color value scale because the paint mixing and application and mixing was good. I could've done better on the orange color value scale because the application wasn't very good due the the translucence of the color when white was added to it. If I were to do this project over again, I would take more time on the orange color value scale because I felt that it could've been better if more coats were added.

The second project we did in this unit was the color value painting. We had to make 3 tints and 3 shades of each color on the color wheel and include them in a painting of our choice. I decided to make a herring-bone pattern because I like organization and I like how the colors were in order like the color wheel and the rainbow. I used acrylic paints and canvas for this project. I think that I did well on the primary colors because they were less translucent when I added white to them. I could've done better on the secondary and tertiary colors by adding more coats to them so that I wouldn't be able to see the white under the paint. If I could do this project over again, I would put more coats on the secondary and tertiary colors.
