Emotion Design

For this project, we were first assigned to complete a chart that consisted of many very different emotions. We had to draw a small design in a box that reminded us of that emotion by using different line values and colors. Once we finished that part of the project, our classmates went around to each of our charts and choosed the one that they liked the best. A lot of my classmates chose my drawing of "free." We then had to take that emotion that had the most amount of votes and create a larger piece inspired by that emotion. In my original, small design, there were a lot of small circles that looked similar to flowers or the sun. I decided that I wanted to use that same design, but use a bigger variety of colors and different lines. I started by using graphite to sketch small flower-looking things, and quickly found myself covering the entire paper with them. I drew small circles and made little swirls inside, then very randomly drew the petals or rays. I also made some into bunches to make the piece have more dimension. When I was done with drawing the design with pencil, I then decided that I wanted to paint them very lightly with watercolor. I wanted to incorporate oranges and yellows but I wanted to make sure they were light enough so that they still seemed very dainty. After I painted all of the little flowers, I decided to outline the bunches of flowers in a fine point black pen. I wanted to do this to give the piece more dimension. By adding the outlining, I think it made those parts of the piece pop a lot and made it look more interesting. Overall, I am very proud of this piece because I think it matches the emotion very well with the design and colors. I think if I could change one thing about this piece, it would add more colors or possibly make a series made up of smaller drawings, which could help to incorporate a variety of colors.
