Time Capsule Drawings

For this assignment, I was assigned to make four separate pieces, each following a separate prompt. The top left was responding to prompt "draw something that you depend on regularly." I chose to draw my shoe because I wear shoes everyday, so it was something that I depend on a lot. To start, I put my shoe on the table and began drawing the outline from left to right. Once I was done drawing the outline with graphite, I usd colored pencil to color it in. I tried to make the shade of black a little lighter for the places on my shoe that were reflecting a little bit of light. I did this by just using a slightly lighter hand when coloring it in. I colored all the black part of the sandal first, then moved on to the sole of the shoe, which I knew would be the most difficult. The outside had a brown, grainy look to it, so I had to think of a way that I could accomplish that on the drawing. I decided to use different shades of brown and tan and just draw a bunch of little dots to give it that grainy effect. Next, I had to draw the inside of the shoe and the different shadows that the actual sandal part was putting onto it. I did this by making it darker where the shadows were. I also had to make the places darker where there were imprints left from my feet. I did this by, again, making it a little darker where the imprints were. Overall, this is my favorite piece in this project because I feel like I put the most work into this one, and it really payed off. I think the different shades of black make it look really realistic. I think it would've been cool if I colored it in with black pen because it would've given it the matte effect that my shoe has.

The top left is my drawing of a hallway inside the school. I started by making an outline of the door, then connecting all the lines from the corners of the door to the corners of the paper. I used a ruler to make sure that all my lines were straight and I had the right proportions. I tried my best to include all the little details that I could see sitting in front of the hallway, so I included all the bolts in the doors and all the bricks. I used graphite for the entire piece. I decided to leave it black and white because I thought it kind of looked like an architectural blueprint, and I thought it was cool that way. If I were to change anything when doing this project, I would've used a ruler to make all the little lines for the bricks. I think it would've looked a little bit cleaner if I did that. Overall, I am pretty proud of this piece and it is definitely one of my favorites.

The bottom left is my drawing of my hand in an interesting gesture. My mom showed me how she knows the alphabet in sign language, so I thought it would be cool if I did a sign language H. I started by just light drawing the outline of the hand with pencil, then I moved on to drawing the wrinkles and shading the shadows. When I was happy with the shape, which wasn't after redrawing the fingers multiple times, I created a slightly darker outline so that you could clearly see it from far away. I then drew in the fingernails and decided to color them pink because that is the color that I had on my nails at the time, and I thought it would be cool if that was the only color in the piece. I finished by making sure my shading and proportions were right. Looking back on this piece, I think it would've been cool to spend a little more time on getting the shadows right. I didn't have to proper tools to shade at my house, so I was just using my finger, which could be the reason it was a little messy. Overall, I think that the meaning behind this is cool and interesting, and I like how it turned out in the end.

The bottom right is my cropped self portrait drawing. I chose to draw the top right of my face because I think drawing eyes is sort of fun and I wanted to see how realistic I could get it to my actual eye. I began by outlining the face and making room for the hair. I did a rough sketch of the hair at first to see what the proportions would have to be like. Then, I drew the eyebrow. I did this by doing soft strokes with a pencil in the shape of an eyebrow, then I used my finger to shade it in and make it fuller. I think that the shape of the eyebrow is pretty similar to mine. Next, I drew the eye. I started with the inner corner to think about how big or how small the eye would have to be. After I finished the eye, I did a little bit of shading for the nose, then colored the eye blue, because I thought it might be cool if that was the only color in the piece. Looking back on this piece, I wish I had spent a little more time focusing on the proportions and making sure the eye shape was right. I also wish I had put in more effort drawing the facial features. I think that I could've made the eye more realistic. This is probably the piece that I am least proud of in the series, and I hope to eventually get better at drawing facial features.
