Slab Mugs and Platters

This assignment was to use the slab technique to make mugs and platters. I made 3 mugs and 3 platters. To make a mug, I put some clay in the slab roller, then took it out and measured it to make sure that the angles of the mug were 90 degrees. I made a rectangle, then used the excess clay to make the base and the handle. My first mug had small circles on it that kind of look like Christmas lights. For the second mug, I made a pyramid out of flowers from the flower stamp. This mug was a little wider than the others. For my final mug, I left it plain and clean. After they were all bisque fired, I glazed them all. I glazed the first one with a green glaze, the second with a metallic gold glaze, and the third with a marigold colored glaze. I also made 3 platters. My first platter is a pineapple shaped platter. I made this platter by making the shape of a pineapple, then putting it into the piece of circle styrofoam that would make a circle-shaped bowl in the middle of it. To make it stand up and be sturdy, I put small round "feet" on the bottom. I did this with 2 of my platters. I glazed this platter with matte yellow and shiny green glaze. After it was fired, I really liked how the finished product looked! The second platter I made was just a simple round platter, using a small circular piece of styrofoam this time. Again, I put small circular feet on the bottom. I glazed this platter with a lavender color. I ended up coming out a darker, more gray-purple because the clay isn't white, so I probably would've chosen a different color. My final platter was a simple rectangular platter with curled up handles. The ends are sort of rounded because I used a large circular styrofoam piece to make it. I didn't put and feet on the bottom of this one. I glazed my final platter pink. Overall, I think I did pretty well with using the techniques that we were taught prior to making the mugs and platters. I think I could've done better with my color choices for some of them, but overall I was pretty happy with the final products!
