Circle Project

For this assignment, we were told to come up with a design for a piece that incorporated circles. We could use any form of circle we wanted. We were allowed to choose how we went about the project, having choice of materials. When I first started thinking of what I wanted to make, I immediately thought of the mandalas we made in 3rd grade. We used pastel to make our own, unique mandalas. I decided that this is what I wanted to do. I started by finding a small circle shape in the artroom to use to make the first outline of my circle. Next, I found a slightly bigger circle and traced that around the smaller circle. I then found 2 more bigger circles and outlined those as well. When I was done making those circles, I thought about what designs I wanted to do in between them. Since the space between the two smallest circles was so small, I just drew a lot of random little lines. Since I had made little rectangles, I wanted to incorporate a different shape into the next section in between circles. I decided to use triangles and make by whole design look somewhat like a sun. After I was finished making that design, I noticed that it looked a little like a compass, but I liked it that way. Lastly, I made random shaped rectangles on the outside to make it look more like a sun. I like how I made it look like the shape of the sun, but the elements of it don't exactly match what the sun actually looks like. I did all the circles and designs with graphite, then I went in with a fine point black pen and outlined everything. I did this to make the design stand out from the watercolor I was going to use. Then, I went in with watercolor and used a variety of different colors. After the critique we did in class, I made the green and blue on the rectangles a little darker so that they would stand out more. If I were to do this project over again, I would try to challenge myself by making more complex designs. Overall, I like how my final product turned out, and I am proud of how neat the final product is.
