For this project, we were assigned to stick to our concentrations and create a fourth piece revolving around them. My concentration is stars, and I had already used wire, clay, and sculpey clay. I decided to use glass with the new glass firing tool that was available to me because I wanted to experiment and try something new. I started by grabbing a large square piece of glass that I would use as my base. Then, I gathered a bunch of yellow glass pieces to start making stars. I quickly realized that this project would be more challenging than my previous projects because we had a limited number of supplies. There weren't enough pieces of yellow glass to make as many stars as I was hoping, so I decided to put one big star in the middle, then use tiny pieces of yellow glass to make it look like tiny stars out in the distance. I started by making my big star, using a tiny bit of glue to make it stay on the base. I really liked how the star didn't come out perfectly shaped. Next, I collected a bunch of black pieces of glass for the background. I began gluing these on one by one, placing little yellow glass pieces in the gaps as I went. The gluing part was probably the most challenging because it didn't dry quickly. The pieces of glass were always moving around and I had to be careful when handling my piece. When I was finished putting all the black pieces on, I added some finishing touches by gluing in some small yellow and black pieces. I then fired it in the glass kiln. When it came out, some of the pieces I put on that I thought were black were actually purple, but I really like how it came out.
