This assignment was to find an artist we were inspired by and do research on them, then later use their techniques and create something similar to theirs. I chose Jeff Campana as my artist. I was drawn to his ceramic art because I liked how it looked like it was a bunch of pieces of clay all stuck together. I liked the flower bowl the best because I liked the colors and I liked how the final product was constructed. After doing the research assignment, I began making my own wall decor, inspired by his flower bowl. To do this, I started by making a slab out of clay. I then shaped it into a circle. After that, I started to cut out the different pieces of the flower. I started by making the round center of the flower. I continued by cutting out symmetrical petals from my slab, making sure to be gentle with them so that they would keep their shape. After the slab was cut into its pieces, I scored and slipped all the pieces back together, but made sure not to smooth out the top so that it would look like they were all different pieces of clay at some time. I then smoothed it out to make the edges cleaner. I then went on to make one more piece. I decided to make a cup this time. I used the same technique that I did with the flower, cutting out the individual pieces then putting them all back together. I started by doing the same thing I would do as if I was making a normal mug, but after I made the slab, I cut out triangles. I then scored and slipped them back together and smoothed out the edges, making sure not to cover the crease of the triangles. After they were bisque fired, I glazed them. I used marigold colored glaze for the inside of the flower, pink for the petals, and blue for the part surrounding the flower. For the cup, I used the same colors, but put pink on the inside, and blue and marigold on the outside. These haven't been glaze fired yet, which is why the picture below is of the pieces before they were fired.
