For this project, we were first assigned to define what a community was. I defined community as a group of people who all work together towards a common goal. We were then assigned to create a piece reflecting this definition of community. Originally I wanted to do something with a bunch of hands but I realized that idea is a little cliche. I decided that since I wrote that a community is a group of people who work together, I wanted to include the idea that everyone's thoughts matter. I decided to have some heads of a variety of different people each with their own unique thought bubble, each of their thought bubbles overlapping to show how they are working together. I went right into my piece with paint, not even sketching it out with graphite. I did this because I didn't want the heads to look perfectly circular or symmetrical. I made sure to mix colors so that each head was unique. Because I wanted to have enough room for the thought bubble, I made it so the heads were only from the eyebrows up. When I was done the heads, I went back in and painted some highlights in the hair to make it look more realistic. After that I sketched out the shapes of the thought bubbles. I made them all different shapes and colors to represent everyone's different opinions. When I was done, I painted the background a light gray to fill the space. When I was done with everything, I went back in and did a few more coats on the thought bubbles. Overall, I am proud of this piece and how I was able to convey my idea of community through a painting.
