The point of this assignment was to pick one of the two artists we were assigned; and then create a piece based on their artwork. I was given Gustav Klimt and Alex Calder as my artist. I decided to do an inspired piece based on the many sculptures by Alex Calder. Taking inspiration from his very notable style, large sculptures of metal usually painted red, I created my own miniature sculpture. Naming my piece ‘Red Fish’, I used a combination of cardboard, foam, felt, glue, and paint to create this. I think that if you compare ‘Red Fish’ next to one of Alex Calder's own sculptures you can see the similarities. I think I did a good job with actually designing my sculpture. Wanting to go for a flowing image, I decided to take my inspiration from a fish. Sketching out my design, I made my appear to be in mid-dive. Overall I enjoyed the final sketch that I came up with; and decided to make the actual form of it. This is where I a countered some difficulties. I struggled with actually cutting out each of the pieces; and then refitting them so that they would fit together. The board that I used for the sculpture was very stiff, and was hard to get around to cut. It was especially troubling when cutting out the smaller parts, which took lots of focus to get through. Personally if I could change anything, or just start over; I might've actually changed my inspiration to Calders Circus. I loved seeing the videos of it in motion; and I enjoyed the tiny wire people. I would've done this, but at the time I didn't have any wire on me.
