22. Concentration #6

Artist Statement:

The final piece in our artist concentration assignment for this year, as you can probably determine, I broke away from my snake theme that I’d been previously trying to follow in previous pieces of my artwork and decided to instead focus my attention on the new subject on this piece instead. Though I did leave my snake theme, something that didn't change between each of my pieces was my use of ink as one of my main materials. Black ink is one of my main mediums when creating this, water based and alcohol based both being used, I also used graphite and a white ink pen; this pen having an interesting result when blended with my waterbased ink, turning the base color black into dark powdery blue instead, something that I used to my advantage and decided to work into the overall composition of my piece by working in smaller details with the white ink and adding different values to the piece with the blue.

Compared to my original sketch-work for this piece, which I did earlier at the beginning of the year, nothing much changed; my main figure staying the same along with the background. Perhaps the only thing that I can admit changed from what I thought about in the beginning and what I actually did, in the end, would be the use of colors. Originally I was just going to have this piece be a plain black and white project, then I thought I might add some touches of red. But then after I realized the effects that the white pen had on the watery ink I decided them to change my pops of color to blue.

Overall I’m pretty with how this piece turned out. I like the overall competition and the final color decisions that I decided to go with. The whole piece has a very fantasy feel to it, and even though I didn't follow my concentration theme of snakes, that fantasy feel has continued to appear in other pieces of mine. But if I were to go back and revised this work, I think I would make my graphite shading in the back darker, so you’d be able to see more of a separation in between the trees.
