Concentration #3

Artist Statement

Continuing with my concentration of "What's in the woods...?", I decided to complete one of my thumbnails sketches and turn it into the final piece for concentration #2. Keeping to the essentially the same themes and materials, the recurring characters of the black shadowy creatures and the woods (and like my last concentration piece) the main mediums that I used were watercolor paints and ink; though the scene this time depicts a graveyard instead of just the woods or a house.

Though I was excited to complete this piece after finishing the thumbnail, I'm not that happy with the final product. Delving away from my last pieces style, I wanted to experiment more with the texture of the tree's bark in this one. But after completing it, I found it a bit busy and dark. Because of that, I also felt that I had to darken the rest of the scene (grass and background) to match the trees. The ink work I felt wasn't my best either. My lines got too wonky and thick, and in my opinion, don't work well.

If I were to revise concentration #2, I won't try to alter this final piece. Instead, I would start completely over. I would make sure my lines were thinner in the new piece and experiment more with the watercolor so I don't mess up the overall product.
