5. Hand Project

Describe: For this assignment we were tasked with a creating a piece that focused around 2+ pure contour hands, along with including zentangles somewhere in our piece. I decided my subject would be focusing on the palm of one of my hands, which included a eye, and just expanding from there. In this piece I only used two materials, pencils for my sketch and ink for my final outline. When we were given this assignment, I wasn't really that inspired in the beginning to create something; in my mind hand weren't really an ‘inspiring’ subject. After a little while of brainstorming, I finally came up with my basic sketch. Recently I've been having a fascination with eyes, as you can tell by my pumpkin, and I decided to besides having my hands as the main subject, to also include a eye as the subject to. Placing it in the center of the palm, I think it acts as a breaking point in the hands. Because this was a pure contour of our hand subjects, line played a extremely big role in this piece; along with being a building block in the zentangles to. I also tried my best to use balance and pattern throughout this piece. Pattern worked out perfectly seeing as though with the requirement of having zentangles, patterns were kinda a necessarily. Balance on the other hand was a bit hard to figure out. I successfully placed the hands correctly with each other, both matching and looking even from my perspective, but I think you can see my struggle with the triangle. I spent a good 30 minutes trying to make it seem even on both sides; but because of the different size and arrangements of the hands, it didn't really work.

Analyze: Analyzing this artwork, grouping was a techniques that I think accompanied the whole piece. Because I wanted my main focus to be the palm of the hand and the eyes, I wanted everything to come/from around that center point. Because of this, things just began to group around the main center point because of my need to focus on the palm. Because of wanting my main focus to be the palm and eye, i didn't want to add much detail around the outside; originally I only planned on adding the zentangles after the finished hands. But looking at all the blank space, I decided it just wasn't suiting me. I decided to input a minimal design around the hand, in which where I came up with the triangle design. Yes I might have been inspired by the ‘all seeing eye’, but no this isn't illuminati propaganda.

Evaluate: In the beginning of this project when we were coming up with ideas, I knew that I wanted to do a ‘spookier’ subject then just hands (explaining where the eye came from). From the development of the eyes, everything just branched out after that. I didn't really want this artwork to have a meaning, more so I wanted people to think up a meaning. What do they think it meanings, what do they think the history is? Again I believe many people will look at this and think “ILLUMINATI!”; but if that's what they want to believe, then I’ll let them believe that. All I wanted to do was create something ‘strange’ and ‘spooky’. I've always liked the strange or mysterious things in the world, the things that can't be explained; and I think going with my ‘strange’ and ‘spooky’ theme that's what I really tried to embody in this artwork. Im proud with the final draft, though the off-ness of the triangle does both me a bit I can overlook it. But i think to make this piece stronger, I should really add some color in the future. Color was always up in the air for me when I was designing this piece, as I never really decided if I wanted to include it. But looking at my final draft I believe it would be a good choice when I have time. Im also think about maybe including some lotus flowers around the triangle, though I haven't really decided yet.
